Chapter 6

The federal grounding of the Vance corporate jet made front-page news across the tri-state area within hours. Richard Vance was intercepted by federal agents inside the private terminal of the municipal airport, his designer luggage tossed haphazardly across the tarmac as security seals were slapped onto his briefcases. The illusion of untouchable corporate aristocracy was systematically dismantled live on cable television, broadcasting the fall of the Vance dynasty to millions of homes.

Inside the precinct, Richard sat across from Detective Miller in an interrogation room identical to the one where Elena had broken down. Unlike his sister-in-law, however, Richard radiated furious indignation. He leaned back in his chair, his expensive suit rumpled, his face dark with suppressed rage.

"This is an illegal seizure, and you know it," Richard barked, slamming his fist onto the metal table. "I am the managing director of Vance Holdings. I travel for business. Arresting me without formal charges is a violation of international corporate protocols."

Miller calmly opened a ledger extracted from one of Richard’s seized briefcases. He flipped the pages until he stopped at a signature line bearing Richard’s initials, forged on a shell-company transfer dated three days prior to Clara’s death.

"International corporate protocols don't apply when you're funneling millions of dollars of minor-warranted trust funds into offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands, Mr. Vance," Miller stated evenly. "And they certainly don't protect you when your co-conspirator—Elena—has already provided a comprehensive breakdown of how you both orchestrated the takeover of Clara’s estate."

Richard’s face paled noticeably. The aggressive bravado evaporated, replaced by a sudden, frantic calculation. "Elena lied. She’s unstable. She always has been. She panicked and pushed Clara down those stairs of her own accord. I had nothing to do with the physical altercation."

"No, you just provided the financial motive and the legal cover," Miller replied, sliding a printed audit report across the table. "You signed off on the fraudulent asset liquidation while Clara was still breathing. That makes you an accessory to murder, Richard. Not to mention grand larceny and conspiracy to commit fraud."

Richard stared at the signature on the document, his hands trembling slightly. The web of deceit he and Elena had woven over the years had become a noose. Every transaction, every forged document, and every silenced dissenting voice was now documented in crisp black and white. He realized with terrifying certainty that there was no way out. The Vance empire was built on quicksand, and the tide had finally come in.
