Chapter 5

Across the precinct, in a quiet, sunlit conference room overlooking the city skyline, Arthur Sterling poured two cups of chamomile tea. He slid one cup across the polished mahogany table toward Maya, who sat quietly in a leather armchair that was far too big for her. The plush rabbit rested safely on the table between them, its mechanical secrets now secured in an evidence locker downstairs.

"You did very well today, Maya," Arthur said softly, his voice losing the harsh, commanding edge he had used inside the funeral home. "Your mother would have been extremely proud of your courage."

Maya wrapped her small hands around the warm ceramic mug, blowing gently on the surface of the tea. "Mommy told me to be brave," she replied, her voice steady and mature beyond her years. "She said Uncle Arthur would keep us safe once the bad people were caught."

Arthur offered a faint, melancholy smile. He had known Clara for over a decade, serving as the legal shield for the Vance family's numerous corporate entities. He had watched from the periphery as greed slowly poisoned the household, tearing siblings apart over inheritances and corporate control. But Clara had been different; she had possessed a quiet resilience, sensing the impending danger long before the tragedy occurred. She had come to Arthur three months ago, sliding a flash drive and a modified toy across his desk with instructions that sounded paranoid at the time, but had ultimately proven prophetic.

"Your mother was a remarkably smart woman," Arthur murmured, looking out the window at the gray clouds beginning to part over the city. "She anticipated every move Elena and Richard planned to make. She knew they would try to sweep her death under the rug."

"And Uncle Richard?" Maya asked, looking up with her dark, piercing eyes. "Is he a bad person too?"

Arthur hesitated for a fraction of a second. Richard Vance was intricately linked to the embezzlement scheme, though direct physical involvement in the murder had yet to be proven. However, with Elena’s confession all but guaranteed under the weight of the digital evidence, Richard’s legal firewall was crumbling rapidly. Auditors from the federal prosecutor's office were already descending upon the Vance family headquarters, seizing hard drives, bank statements, and corporate ledgers.

"Richard made poor choices, Maya," Arthur answered carefully, choosing his words to protect the child's fragile emotional state without offering false comfort. "People who prioritize money over family often find themselves standing alone in the end. Right now, our focus is on ensuring you are safe, protected, and provided for."

The door to the conference room opened softly, and Detective Miller stepped inside, holding a thick file folder. He nodded toward Arthur, signaling that the first phase of the interrogation was complete. Elena had officially broken down, signing a preliminary confession acknowledging the physical altercation, though she desperately attempted to shift the blame for the financial embezzlement onto Richard.

"It’s beginning to unravel," Miller said quietly, pulling out a chair. "Elena is talking. And Richard is currently trying to book a flight to Zurich on his corporate jet, which has already been grounded by federal marshals."
