Chapter 4

The transition from the solemn chapel to the sterile holding rooms of the precinct felt abrupt and jarring. The fluorescent lights hummed with a low, agonizing frequency that grated against Elena’s frayed nerves. Sitting across the metal interrogation table, she stared at her reflection in the double-sided mirror, her fingers nervously pleating the fabric of her maroon shawl. The fight had drained from her, replaced by a cold, creeping dread.

The door clicked open, and Detective Miller walked in, tossing a manila folder onto the table. He didn't sit down immediately. Instead, he leaned against the doorframe, crossing his arms over his chest as he studied the woman who had once reigned as the social queen of the county.

"The digital tech team finished decoding the raw file from the stuffed animal," Miller began, his voice devoid of inflection. "High-definition audio, stabilized wide-angle video. It captures the entire staircase argument from the second-floor landing. Every word. Every shove."

Elena swallowed hard, her throat feeling like sandpaper. She kept her gaze fixed on the table. "Clara was unstable," she whispered, the lie tasting sour on her tongue. "She tripped. I tried to catch her. Anyone watching that objectively would see—"

"Objectively, Ms. Vance, it shows you striking her across the face twice," Miller interrupted, his tone cutting through her defense like a scalpel. "It shows you grabbing her by the collar, pushing her backward over the lip of the top stair, and then walking away while she fell. That isn't an accident. That’s premeditated manslaughter at the very least."

The silence that followed was deafening. Elena closed her eyes, the memory rushing back with horrifying clarity. She hadn't planned for Clara to die; she had only planned to silence her threats regarding the family trust embezzlement. Clara had discovered the offshore accounts, the forged signatures, and the systematic draining of Maya’s inheritance. The confrontation had spiraled out of control, fueled by years of repressed resentment and greed.

"Where is Maya?" Elena asked suddenly, her voice cracking as a strange, desperate maternal instinct flickered beneath her icy exterior.

"Maya is in protective custody, under the legal guardianship of Arthur Sterling," Miller answered flatly. "As per Clara's updated will, filed thirty days ago when she first realized her life was in danger."

Elena looked up sharply. "Arthur? What does Arthur have to do with any of this? He’s just a corporate fixer."

"He’s Clara’s designated executor," Miller corrected. "And now, he’s the one holding all the cards. He walked into this precinct with the video, the financial audits, and a signed deposition from Clara detailing your exact embezzlement scheme. You didn't just push your sister-in-law down the stairs to win a family dispute, Elena. You murdered her to cover up ten million dollars in stolen trust funds."

The weight of the accusation settled over Elena like a tombstone. There were no more lies left to tell, no more alibis to fabricate. The system she had manipulated for decades had finally turned its gears against her, grinding her intricate deceptions into dust.
