Chapter 14

The family court chambers were intimate, quiet, and devoid of the hostile energy that had characterized the federal bankruptcy and criminal trials. Judge Thomas Sterling presided over the proceedings with a warm, grandfatherly smile that contrasted sharply with his stern demeanor on the bench.
Maya sat beside Arthur at the oak table, wearing a crisp white dress and her favorite blue cardigan. Her hair was neatly tied back, and she held a small bouquet of wildflowers she had picked from the cottage garden that morning.
"We are here today to formalize the permanent adoption petition for Maya Vance," Judge Thomas announced gently, looking down over his reading glasses at Arthur and Maya. "The background checks are complete, the home study has exceeded all state standards, and the court-appointed guardian ad litem has submitted an unreserved recommendation in favor of this petition."
Judge Thomas looked directly at Arthur. "Mr. Sterling, you are prepared to assume full legal, emotional, and financial responsibility as Maya’s adoptive parent?"
"I am, Your Honor," Arthur answered clearly, his voice steady and resolute.
The judge then turned his attention to the little girl. "Maya, do you understand what this means? It means Arthur will be your dad from now on, to love you, protect you, and care for you always."

Maya nodded, her expression earnest and bright. "Yes, Your Honor. I want him to be my dad."
Judge Thomas smiled broadly, picking up his wooden gavel and tapping it softly against the block—not with the harsh resonance of a criminal conviction, but with the gentle, rhythmic sound of a new beginning. "Then by the power vested in me by the state, this adoption is officially finalized. Welcome to your new family, Maya."
