Chapter 3

The heavy wooden doors creaked open just enough for Detective Sergeant Miller to slip inside, his dark raincoat shedding droplets of cold rain onto the pristine marble. Miller was a veteran investigator with tired eyes and a profound weariness for the dark secrets of affluent families. He surveyed the tense scene, noting the pale complexion of Elena Vance, the defensive posture of Richard, and the stoic calm of Arthur Sterling standing beside young Maya.

"Dispatch says someone tripped the silent panic alarm from inside," Miller said, resting his hand casually near his service weapon. "Care to explain why the exits are bolted from the inside?"

Arthur stepped forward, bridging the physical gap between the detective and the grieving family. He extended the plush rabbit outward, handling it with extreme care. "You received a distress call, Sergeant. I believe you’ll find the origin of that call right here inside this toy."

Elena stepped forward, her voice rising in panic. "Detective, don't touch that! It's an invasion of privacy. It’s a hacked device, a sick prank by a grieving child—"

"Quiet, Elena," Miller ordered sharply, holding up a hand. He looked at Maya, his expression softening just a fraction. He knelt down to eye level with the little girl, ignoring the indignant protests erupting from Richard Vance in the background. "Did you record this, sweetheart?"

Maya nodded slowly. Her small chest rose and took a steady breath before she spoke in a soft, clear whisper. "Mommy gave it to me. She said if Aunt Elena ever hurt her again, I had to press the red eye on the bear’s foot and keep it hidden. She said the camera would tell the truth when nobody else would listen."

Miller looked up at Arthur, who offered a quiet, affirmative nod. The detective stood back up, his jaw set in a hard line. He unclipped a sterile evidence bag from his belt, holding it open as Arthur carefully lowered the modified stuffed animal inside. The blue light flickered once more against the clear plastic of the bag before fading into darkness, sealing the digital evidence beyond anyone's reach.

Richard Vance slammed his palm onto the back of a wooden pew. "This is an outrage! You’re relying on the testimony of a toddler who doesn’t even understand what she’s holding! I demand my lawyer be present before any digital media is accessed."

"Your lawyer can meet us down at the precinct, Mr. Vance," Miller replied calmly, signaling the two uniformed officers outside to step fully into the chapel. "Right now, everyone in this room is being detained for questioning regarding the suspicious death of Clara Vance."

Elena felt the room spin. The marble floor beneath her feet seemed to dissolve, leaving her suspended over an abyss of her own making. She looked at her reflection in the glass of the front doors, barely recognizing the woman staring back. The maroon shawl felt like a heavy iron yoke, choking off her air. Her carefully orchestrated plan was unraveling thread by thread, destroyed not by a grand detective or a rival corporate entity, but by the quiet, unblinking eye of a toy rabbit.
