Chapter 4

Julian’s skepticism hung in the air like a physical barrier between them. He turned sharply on his heel, marching over to the smart-home control panel mounted beside the pantry door. With swift, practiced taps of his index finger, he brought up the perimeter diagnostics on the high-resolution touch screen. Green checkmarks blinked green across the front gate, the driveway sensors, and the perimeter fence line.
"See ?" Julian said without turning around, his voice laced with defensive triumph. "All zones secure. No unauthorized entries. No motion detected outside the designated paths. You’re spinning a narrative, Claire, to cover up a betrayal that has nothing to do with external threats and everything to do with your broken promises."
Claire shook her head slowly, feeling a cold knot form in the pit of her stomach. She shifted Sophie gently as the toddler drifted into an uneasy, exhausted sleep against her chest. "The perimeter sensors only register physical force, Julian. They only register someone cutting a fence or tripping a laser. They don't register digital infiltration. They don't register the fact that your entire network architecture was compromised three weeks ago by someone who knows your encryption keys better than you do."
Julian froze with his finger hovering over the screen. He turned back slowly, his eyes narrowing into suspicious slits. "What did you just say?"
"I said your security system is a sieve," Claire said, stepping away from the counter and walking toward the kitchen island, careful not to jostle the sleeping baby. "You were so proud of your proprietary software, so arrogant about your encrypted cloud storage. But you left a backdoor open in the firmware update last month. I didn't disable the living room camera, Julian. Someone else did. They turned it off remotely while they uploaded a payload directly to your local server."
Julian let out a sharp, incredulous laugh, though the color had noticeably drained from his face. "Impossible. The firmware is military-grade. It requires biometric authorization—"

"Which was stolen," Claire interrupted, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "From your office laptop while you were in Geneva last Tuesday. While you were busy closing your multi-million-dollar acquisition, someone cloned your thumbprint and your access credentials. They’ve been living inside your network, Julian. Watching every feed, reading every email, tracking every movement we make. The man you saw on the screen a moment ago wasn't just some phantom from my past. He was the ghost in your machine."
The words seemed to hit Julian with the physical force of a blow. He stared at her, the aggressive anger slowly morphing into a profound, chilling realization. He knew the vulnerability of the architecture he had commissioned. He knew that absolute security was an illusion sold to the paranoid.
