Chapter 11

The rough concrete of the utility alcove scraped against Claire’s knees as she crawled out from beneath the fractured drywall, clutching little Sophie tight against her chest. The air outside smelled sharply of ozone and wet autumn leaves. Above them, the sky was a deep, starless void, save for the faint glow of distant streetlights filtering through the dense canopy of the surrounding suburban oaks.

Julian followed closely behind her, wriggling through the narrow gap with practiced agility, his tall frame folding easily as he dropped silently onto the concrete beside her. He clicked off the tactical flashlight immediately, plunging them into near-total darkness to avoid casting a beam that could be spotted from the driveway.

"Stay behind me," Julian whispered, his lips brushing against Claire’s ear as he leaned close. His hand reached out to grasp her arm gently, guiding her toward the thick, overgrown cedar hedge that separated their property from the neighboring woodlot.

They moved with agonizing slowness, ducking low beneath the drooping evergreen branches that brushed against their shoulders like skeletal fingers. The ground beneath their feet was soft and muddy, threatening to slip with every step, but Claire focused entirely on the steady, rhythmic breathing of little Sophie against her chest. The toddler had exhausted herself with crying and had drifted back into a fitful, heavy sleep, her small face warm against Claire’s collarbone.

As they reached the outer edge of the cedar hedge, a sudden flash of harsh white light cut through the darkness ahead of them.

Julian froze instantly, pulling Claire down into the shadowed mud beside a thick root system. Twenty feet away, on the paved driveway leading to the detached garage, the heavy-set man in the tactical jacket stood leaning against the side of a idling black SUV. In his hand, he held a high-powered tactical spotlight, sweeping the beam methodically across the back lawn and the perimeter fence line.

The beam swept past the cedar hedge, missing them by mere feet, illuminating the swirling dust motes in the cold air with stark clarity.

"He’s running a sweep," Julian whispered, his mouth inches from Claire’s ear. His heart hammered so loudly against his ribs that Claire could feel the vibration through the chill air. "He knows we didn't go out the front. He’s checking the perimeter blind spots."

"How do we get to the road ?" Claire whispered back, her voice barely audible over the distant hum of the SUV engine.

"We don't," Julian replied grimly. "Not by the driveway. We have to cross the creek bed through the ravine behind the woodlot. It’s rough terrain, but it’s the only way off this property without tripping their remaining proximity sensors."
