Chapter 1

The afternoon light slanted through the double glass doors of the pristine suburban kitchen, casting long, geometric shadows across the polished white marble island. Claire stood frozen near the edge of the counter, her breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps that rattled inside her chest. Strapped tightly against her chest in a sturdy canvas carrier, little Sophie whimpered softly. The toddler’s cheeks were flushed pink, and her eyes rimmed with angry red from a fresh bout of quiet tears. In the center of the island lay the small wooden spoon that Claire had used just moments ago to stir the simmering broth on the induction stove. The spoon still carried a faint trace of steam, a pathetic remnant of domestic normalcy before the front door shuddered under a heavy, furious blow.
Julian burst through the double glass doors, his tailored black suit jacket pulling tight across his broad shoulders as he strode into the brightly lit room. His face was a mask of cold, controlled fury, the veins in his temples throbbing visibly under his short-cropped dark hair. He did not remove his coat or set down his leather briefcase; instead, he closed the distance between them with terrifying speed.
"Vous le savez !" Julian shouted, his voice echoing sharply against the tile backsplash, the French slipping out naturally in his moment of absolute rage.
Claire shrank back against the marble counter, feeling the cold stone press painfully into her spine. She could feel the rapid, frantic beating of Sophie’s heart pressing against her own ribcage. She wanted to run, but the kitchen felt like a trap. Julian stopped three feet away, his chest heaving, his dark eyes locked onto hers with a mixture of betrayal and malice. He reached into the inside pocket of his jacket with a slow, deliberate motion that made Claire flinch, expecting a weapon. Instead, he pulled out his sleek smartphone.
The screen was lit up, broadcasting a high-definition live security camera feed of the very kitchen they were standing in. On the small display, Claire could see herself from a bird's-eye angle, cowering against the counter with the baby carrier attached to her chest. The surreal delay of the live feed showed her own terror echoing back at her in real-time, a digital ghost watching her destruction.

"Alors explique ça…" Julian whispered, his voice dropping to a dangerous, icy register that sent a shiver down her spine. He took another step forward, thrusting the glowing screen inches from her face. "Alors explique-moi ça."
Claire stared wide-eyed at the screen, her mouth slightly open in breathless terror. She knew what the camera had captured. She knew the secret it had recorded while she thought the house was empty.
