Chapter 15

The first rays of golden autumn sunlight broke gently over the skyline of downtown Chicago as Marcus’s silver sedan pulled up outside the federal district courthouse. The morning air was crisp and clear, washing away the shadows of the harrowing night that had tested the very foundations of their family.
As they stepped out of the vehicle onto the wide stone plaza, Claire felt the warm, comforting light touch her face. Little Sophie stretched her tiny arms out in the morning air, letting out a happy little gurgle as she looked around at the bustling city awakening to a new day. Julian stood beside them, his arm wrapped securely around Claire’s shoulders, holding her close against his side with a quiet, unshakeable strength.
The security cameras mounted above the courthouse entrance hummed silently in the morning breeze, but as Julian looked up at them, there was no fear in his eyes—only a profound, hard-earned wisdom. He had learned that true security could never be found in encrypted firewalls, automated locks, or digital surveillance domes. Security was found in truth, in accountability, and in the unwavering devotion of standing together when the cameras finally went dark.
"Are we going home ?" Claire asked softly, looking up into his eyes as federal agents escorted them toward the grand double doors of the building to give their final testimony.

Julian smiled, a genuine, warm expression that hadn't graced his face in years. He reached out to gently brush a stray lock of hair from Sophie’s forehead before turning his gaze back to Claire.
"No," Julian said firmly, tightening his arm around her waist as they walked forward together into the light. "We’re going to build a real home. One with open doors, and nothing left to hide."
