Chapter 13

The municipal parkland offered a dense labyrinth of towering pine trees and winding gravel walking paths that eventually led toward the outer commercial district two miles away. Julian didn't slow down, keeping up a brisk, punishing pace that tested the limits of his physical endurance while supporting Claire, who carried the steady, sleeping weight of little Sophie against her chest.
"Can you make it ?" Julian asked, turning back briefly as they ducked beneath the low branches of a massive weeping willow that hung over the gravel path. His face was streaked with mud and sweat, his tailored suit ruined beyond recognition, but his eyes burned with an intense, protective fire that Claire had never seen in him before.
"I can make it," Claire breathed, her chest heaving as she fought for oxygen in the cold night air. "Just keep moving. Don't look back."
They pushed deeper into the park, putting as much distance as possible between themselves and the sprawling estate they had called home. Behind them, through the distant screen of trees, they could occasionally catch the amber flash of heavy-duty spotlights sweeping across the tree line, but the dense pine canopy acted as a natural shield, swallowing the illumination before it could reach them.
After twenty minutes of sustained movement, the manicured parkland gave way to a quiet, dimly lit suburban street lined with small, unassuming ranch-style homes and parked sedans. In the distance, the neon sign of a twenty-four-hour diner hummed a welcoming, warm red glow against the dark night sky.
Julian slowed his pace as they approached the sidewalk, stepping into the shadow of a large oak tree near a residential driveway. He pulled out his secondary burner phone, his fingers moving rapidly across the glass screen to dial a series of emergency digits.
"Who are you calling ?" Claire asked, leaning against a wooden fence post to catch her breath, gently rocking Sophie, who remained fast asleep despite the harrowing journey.

"An old contact," Julian replied, his eyes fixed on the screen as the call connected on the second ring. "Marcus Vance. Former federal cyber-crimes division, now working private security diagnostics. He’s the only person I know who has the clearance to trace the source IP address of the server that hijacked our home network."
A gruff voice answered on the other end of the line, and Julian began speaking in rapid, hushed tones, explaining the breach, the physical intrusion, and the stolen defense algorithms that had made their home a target. Claire watched him closely, seeing the transformation of a man who had once trusted only in digital metrics, now forced to rely on human trust and raw survival instinct.
