Chapter 7 - The Ghost in the Machine

Marcus laughed, a harsh, grating sound that echoed against the ruined server racks.

"You think a bullet is going to stop what's already in motion, Elena? The upload started the moment the blast charges blew the vault."

Dominic stepped forward, kicking the crowbar away across the sparking floor tiles.

"Who gave you the clearance codes for the subterranean vault, Marcus? You've been locked out of the network for weeks."

Marcus glanced up at the flashing amber monitor above the server rack, where a progress bar sat stubbornly at eighty-seven percent.

"A dynasty like Sterling doesn't just rely on one man, Detective. There are people in Washington who find dead witnesses much more convenient than live trials."

Elena kept her pistol aimed dead-center on Marcus's chest, her finger resting lightly against the trigger guard.

"Put your hands behind your head, Marcus. You're running out of time and oxygen."

Marcus slowly raised his hands, but a wide, manic grin spread across his bruised face.

"Look at the screen, Elena. Eighty-nine percent."

Elena glanced up at the monitor, noticing a secondary hidden protocol initializing automatically in the background—a dead-man's switch tied directly to her personal banking credentials.

"What is that?" Elena demanded, her eyes narrowing as she saw her own father's name flashing across the warning prompt.

Marcus chuckled softly, coughing on the thick smoke rolling through the room.

"It's the cleanup script. The moment that progress bar hits one hundred, every asset you seized from the Sterling trust automatically transfers to an unregistered offshore account held by the federal oversight committee—which Julian's lawyers secretly control."

Dominic lunged at the console, desperately hammering keys to abort the transfer protocol, but the keyboard emitted a sharp, error-laden beep.

"It's hardcoded into the firmware," Dominic swore under his breath. "We can't stop it without the master encryption key."

Elena stared at the screen as the progress bar ticked upward to ninety-four percent, realizing the trap had a double bottom.

"Julian didn't just want to escape tonight; he wanted to bankrupt me twice over before the trial even began."

Marcus smiled wider, stepping back toward the ruptured ventilation shaft behind him.

"You won, Elena. You got your revenge. But you're about to lose everything your father died to protect."

With a sudden, violent lunge, Marcus threw a smoke grenade onto the floor and dropped backward into the dark ventilation shaft before either Elena or Dominic could fire.
