Chapter 10 - The Reappearance

The rain finally broke, turning the dusty industrial yard into a slick morass of mud and freezing droplets. Elena stood frozen in the weeds, her breath catching in her throat as her father—a man she had mourned, buried, and wept over for twenty years—stepped out of the subterranean darkness into the harsh glare of the tactical spotlights. Dr. Arthur Vance was impossibly thin, his skin translucent under the stark white light, his hands trembling as he clutched the battered silver briefcase against his chest like a shield. The black-ops operatives lowered their weapons in sheer astonishment, momentarily paralyzed by the ghost standing before them.

"Father..." Elena whispered, her voice cracking as she took an unsteady step forward across the gravel.

Arthur raised a frail hand to warn her back, his voice raspy and scarred from decades of breathing recycled underground air.

"Don't come any closer, Elena. They didn't just seal this bunker to hide the research; they sealed it to contain the contagion."

Dominic stepped up beside Elena, his weapon still trained on the lead tactical operative who was slowly reaching for his radio.

"Contagion? Dr. Vance, the clinical trials you worked on were leaked to the public three hours ago. The Sterling dynasty is already falling."

Arthur let out a dry, haunting laugh that sounded like dry leaves scraping across concrete.

"The Sterling family were never the masters of this project, Dominic. They were just the bankers who paid for the silence."

One of the black-ops operatives finally snapped out of his shock, leveling his rifle directly at Arthur's chest.

"Target is compromised. Execute protocol Omega and secure the briefcase."

Elena reacted with instinctive fury, lunging forward and tackling the operative just as his finger began to squeeze the trigger. The rifle round punched harmlessly into the muddy ground, sending up a geyser of wet earth. Dominic fired two precise suppression rounds into the pavement near the remaining operatives, forcing them to dive behind their armored truck for cover.

"Get your father into the SUV, now!" Dominic shouted over the rising din of gunfire.

Elena grabbed her father's frail arm, guiding him away from the bunker entrance as bullets ricocheted off the rusted steel walls around them.

Arthur stumbled, coughing violently into a handkerchief that stained dark crimson with blood, but he refused to let go of the silver briefcase.

"They can't have the data, Elena," Arthur gasped as they scrambled into the backseat of Dominic's vehicle. "It's the only cure for the pathogen Julian's company released."

Dominic slammed the SUV into reverse, spinning the steering wheel hard as he backed out of the courtyard while the federal tactical truck opened fire on their rear windshield, shattering the glass into a million glittering fragments.
