Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Vault

The cold glare of federal floodlights transformed the majestic ballroom into a sterile interrogation zone. Elena watched from a velvet armchair as three armed agents pinned Julian against the marble pillars, stripping away the cuff links that bore the family crest of the Sterling dynasty. Julian’s white tuxedo was now stained with soot and his own nervous sweat, his dark hair plastered to his forehead. He stared at Elena with a mixture of pure venom and desperate pleading, realizing that his meticulously constructed empire of lies had finally collapsed into dust. Dominic walked over, handing Elena a leather-bound ledger containing the offshore account numbers Julian had used to siphon her family's trust fund over the past decade.
"The federal marshals have already frozen the primary accounts in Zurich and the Cayman Islands," Dominic murmured, keeping his voice low and professional.
Elena didn't look up from the ledger, her bruised fingers tracing the embossed gold lettering on the cover.
"And his mother? Has Beatrice been notified that her sanctuary of stolen wealth is officially under investigation?"
Dominic adjusted his tie, his expression grim.
"Beatrice is currently boarding her private jet in Geneva. She thinks she can outrun the subpoena."
Elena finally lifted her gaze, her eyes cold and resolute.
"She forgets that Dominic doesn't just manage assets; he clips wings."
Julian thrashed against the agents holding him, his voice cracking as he caught the tail end of their conversation.
"You leave my mother out of this, Elena! She's an old woman; she had nothing to do with the corporate filings!"
Elena stood up slowly, wincing slightly as the bruises on her ribs pulled against her skin, but she refused to show any sign of weakness.
"She signed the transfer orders, Julian. Every single penny of my father's medical research funding went straight into her retirement portfolio while he was dying in that hospital bed."
Julian's eyes widened in sudden terror as he realized the depth of what Elena had uncovered during her months of silent surveillance.
"You... you knew about the hospital fund the entire time? You let me walk you into that noose just to trap us all?"
Elena walked right up to him, the scent of expensive cologne mixing with the smell of ozone and fear.
"I gave you enough rope to hang yourself quite literally, Julian. Enjoy the view."
Dominic stepped between them, his phone buzzing violently in his palm.

"Elena, we have a problem. Beatrice's private jet just altered its flight plan, and it's heading straight toward an unregistered private airstrip in the desert."
