Chapter 3 - The Desert Airstrip

The desert wind howled against the reinforced glass of the black SUV as it barreled down the unpaved access road toward Sector Four. Elena sat in the backseat, her pastel dress replaced by a dark tactical jacket that concealed the still-healing bruises on her arms. Dominic drove with cold precision, his eyes fixed on the illuminated navigation map glowing softly on the dashboard. The horizon ahead was pitch black, save for the faint, twinkling runway lights of a private airfield illegal under international aviation standards. Julian’s mother, Beatrice Sterling, was attempting a desperate midnight flight out of the country, carrying three hard drives containing the digital keys to every shell company the family owned.
Elena tapped the screen of her phone, watching the real-time satellite tracking feed of the Gulfstream jet taxiing down the tarmac.
"She thinks she can vanish into international waters before the asset freeze hits foreign banks."
Dominic shifted gears as the SUV bounced over a jagged rock.
"The local airspace is restricted under federal order, but her pilot has military-grade clearance codes we can't override remotely."
Elena turned her head to look out the side window, her reflection staring back at her with the harsh determination of a woman reborn from the ashes.
"We don't need to override the codes, Dominic. We just need to cut off the runway."
Julian, handcuffed and sullen in the back seat between two federal guards, let out a harsh, bitter laugh.
"You'll never ground that plane, Elena. Beatrice has diplomatic immunity through the consulate in Madrid. The moment your agents touch her, it's an international incident."
Elena didn't even turn to look at him, her voice chillingly calm.
"Diplomatic immunity doesn't apply to human trafficking and corporate espionage, Julian. And your mother isn't just fleeing with stolen money; she's carrying the encrypted medical records of the trial patients you poisoned."
Julian stopped laughing, his face turning the color of wet chalk as the full realization of the federal charges hit him.
"You... you found the trial data? That's impossible. We burned the physical hard drives in the incinerator."
Elena held up a sleek silver flash drive, letting it catch the dashboard light for a split second.
"Digital footprints never truly wash away, Julian. Your mother is about to discover that loyalty among thieves is the first thing to burn."

The SUV crested a low dune, revealing the sprawling tarmac just three hundred yards away, where the massive white jet was already spinning up its engines for takeoff.
