Chapter 6: The Breach

The front door burst inward with a deafening crash, showering the entryway with splinters of painted pine and shattered brass. Two uniformed police officers, followed closely by a tall, broad-shouldered man in a tailored charcoal suit, poured into the foyer. The man in the suit was David. His face was a mask of cold, controlled fury, his jaw set so tightly that the muscles stood out in stark relief. His sharp eyes scanned the immediate area, instantly locking onto Clara where she sat huddled on the hallway floor. Without a word to Mark or Evelyn, David rushed past the officers, dropping to his knees beside his sister. "Clara! Oh god, Clara, are you okay?" David’s voice cracked slightly, betraying the deep fear he had felt during the silent drive over. He gently placed his hands on her shoulders, inspecting her for injuries, his eyes lingering on the reddish-brown hair tangled around her face and the dark bruise forming on her shoulder. Clara nodded weakly, leaning into her brother’s familiar warmth. "I'm okay, David. The baby... I think the baby is okay, but my stomach hurts." David’s gaze hardened into pure ice as he looked up from his sister to confront Mark and Evelyn. Mark was still standing near the console table, the black smartphone clutched in his sweaty palm, looking like a cornered animal caught in the headlights of an oncoming train. Evelyn stood slightly behind him, her hands trembling as she clutched the edges of her beige cardigan, her voice rising in a defensive, shrill screech. "You can't just break into our home! This is trespassing! She attacked us! She's unstable, she fell down the stairs on her own!" David stood up slowly, towering over Evelyn with a physical presence that immediately silenced her frantic excuses. He stepped forward, closing the distance between them until Evelyn was forced to take a step back. "Shut your mouth, Evelyn," David said, his voice terrifyingly quiet and devoid of any emotion. "I’ve listened to the entire audio feed from that phone. I heard every word you said. I heard you tell your son to beat a heavily pregnant woman." Mark stepped forward defensively, trying to shield his mother, his aggressive demeanor flaring up once more despite the cops standing nearby. "Back off, David! You don't know what goes on in this house! She was trying to steal everything we built! She was hiding documents!" One of the police officers stepped forward, placing a heavy hand on the butt of his holstered firearm and fixing Mark with a stern, authoritative glare. "Drop the phone, sir. Put your hands behind your back right now. Do not make this any harder than it already is."
