Chapter 3: Shadows on the Wall

The shattered glass crunched beneath Mark’s sneakers as he stepped forward again, moving with a terrifying, calculated slowness. Every muscle in his body was coiled like a spring, ready to release a violence that had been simmering beneath the surface of their marriage for years. Clara backed up until her heel hit the baseboard of the guest bedroom door, finding it locked. Panic surged through her veins, cold and sharp. She was cornered, with no physical exit left in the house. Evelyn stood behind Mark, wringing her hands in her beige cardigan, whispering encouragement that sounded like incantations from a dark ritual. "Make her pay, Mark. Finish it. We can't let her take the house. We can't let her ruin us." Clara kept her eyes fixed on Mark’s face, searching desperately for any trace of the man she had fallen in love with three years ago—the gentle architect who used to sketch designs for their future nursery on the back of paper napkins. That man was gone, buried beneath layers of greed, manipulation, and his mother's toxic influence. In his place stood a stranger wearing her husband's skin. "The police are already getting the ping, Mark," Clara said, her voice surprisingly steady, though her heart was hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. "David has the live feed. If you touch me, or this baby, you spend the rest of your life behind bars." Mark stopped dead in his tracks. The mention of David’s name seemed to puncture the bubble of his rage, replacing it with a sudden, panicked uncertainty. David was a federal prosecutor, a man whose entire career was built on dismantling white-collar criminals and domestic abusers. Evelyn noticed the shift in her son and immediately stepped into the void, her face flushing a mottled crimson. "She's lying! She's bluffing to save her own skin! Hit her, Mark, don't listen to her lies!" Evelyn lunged forward, her fingernails clawing toward Clara’s face with surprising agility for a woman her age. Clara ducked instinctively, but Evelyn managed to grab a handful of her reddish-brown hair, yanking her head backward with a vicious jerk. Pain flared across Clara’s scalp, tearing a sharp gasp from her lips. The phone slipped from her sweaty fingers, clattering loudly onto the wooden floorboards, sliding just out of reach beneath the console table.
