Chapter 5: Echoes at the Doorway

The relentless ringing of the doorbell froze everyone in the hallway as if a spell had been cast. Mark’s arm remained suspended in the air, the black smartphone clutched tightly in his fist, his chest heaving with exertion. Evelyn whipped her head around toward the front entrance, her face draining of all color until she looked like a corpse in a beige cardigan. "Who could that be?" Evelyn whispered, her voice dropping from a hysterical shriek to a nervous, reedy tremble. "Did you invite someone, Mark? Did you tell anyone about this?" Mark slowly lowered his arm, shaking his head, his dark eyes wide with sudden, unadulterated fear. He looked down at Clara, who was still huddled on the floor against the wall, struggling to catch her breath while protecting her rounded belly. The realization seemed to hit Mark all at once: the emergency broadcast had gone through. David hadn't just received a notification; he had likely dispatched local law enforcement alongside his own private investigators. Another heavy knock echoed through the house, followed by a deep, authoritative voice calling out from the porch. "Open the door! Police! We have a report of domestic disturbance and endangerment at this address!" Evelyn panicked, grabbing Mark’s forearm and shaking him violently. "We have to hide the paperwork, Mark! The financial records in the study! If they find the offshore accounts, we’re finished! Tell them she fell! Tell them she tripped on the rug!" Mark stood up slowly, towering over his mother and casting a nervous glance toward the front door. The veneer of absolute control he had worn just moments before had completely shattered, leaving behind a weak, cowardly man terrified of the consequences of his own actions. Clara remained on the floor, leaning her head back against the drywall, a bitter, exhausted smile touching the corners of her bruised lips. "It's over, Mark," she whispered, her voice carrying a quiet, devastating finality. "You can't hide what's on that phone. Every threat, every transaction, every lie you and your mother engineered is already backed up on three different cloud servers." Mark glared down at her, his face contorting with a murderous impulse, but before he could take a step toward her, the sound of heavy boots kicking against the front door echoed through the quiet suburban home. The wooden frame splintered with a loud crack, and the locks gave way.
