Chapter 2: The Edge of the Blade

Mark’s hand grazed the fabric of Clara’s grey sweater, missing the phone by mere millimeters as she dropped her shoulder and spun away. The movement sent a sharp, agonizing cramp radiating through her lower abdomen, doubling her over with a breathless gasp. She bit down hard on her lower lip to keep from crying out, knowing that any sign of physical weakness would only embolden Mark and his mother. Evelyn stepped forward, her leather-soled shoes clicking sharply against the hardwood floor. "Don't let her play the victim, Mark! She's recording everything! Take that phone away from her right now before she destroys your father's legacy!" Evelyn's voice reached a fever pitch, frantic and demanding, as she grabbed Mark's sleeve and yanked him back toward Clara. Mark’s expression hardened further, the momentary hesitation vanishing completely, replaced by a dark, dangerous resolve. He towered over Clara, casting a long, skeletal shadow over her swollen belly. He reached out again, this time with both hands, lunging like a trapped animal. Clara reacted on pure maternal instinct, thrusting her elbow outward with surprising force. Her elbow connected solidly with Mark’s ribs, a dull thud echoing down the corridor. Mark grunted, stumbling backward and crashing heavily against the framed family portraits hanging on the opposite wall. Glass shattered in a cascade of sharp shards, raining down onto the floorboards. Evelyn shrieked, rushing to her son’s side, her face contorted with outrage. "You ungrateful bitch! Look what you did to him!" Evelyn screamed, her fingers digging into Mark's arm as she helped him regain his footing. Clara didn't run; she couldn't. Her legs felt like lead, heavy and unresponsive. Instead, she pressed the side button of the smartphone, activating the emergency broadcast feature that would send her live location and the past thirty seconds of audio to her brother, David. The screen glowed softly in the dimming hallway light, casting an ethereal blue hue across her frightened features. Mark pushed his mother aside, his eyes locked onto the glowing screen with lethal intent. He wiped a drop of blood from his scraped knuckle, his breathing heavy and ragged. "Give me the phone, Clara," he whispered, his voice dangerously low, stripped of all human warmth. "Or I swear to God, you won't live to see the hospital."
