Chapter 1: The First Scream

The fluorescent light in the hallway hummed with a low, agonizing frequency, casting a harsh, clinical glare over the scuffed baseboards and the peeling wallpaper. Clara pressed her back harder against the textured drywall, her breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps that hitched in her throat. Her right hand, slick with nervous sweat, clutched the black smartphone so tightly her knuckles turned a stark, bruised white. Across from her, standing in the center of the narrow corridor, was Mark. His dark hoodie swallowed his torso, and his broad shoulders were squared in a posture of predatory dominance. His short dark hair was damp at the temples, and his face twisted into a mask of cold, unyielding fury. He stepped closer, invading her personal space, his chest almost brushing the thick fabric of her grey knitted sweater. Behind him stood Evelyn, her mother-in-law, whose beige cardigan seemed entirely too soft for the venom dripping from her lips. Evelyn’s blonde hair was pulled back tightly, accentuating the sharp, unforgiving lines of her face. She pointed a manicured, trembling finger straight at Clara’s face, her voice cutting through the hum of the light with terrifying clarity. "Hit her, she needs to lose her place!" Evelyn shrieked, her eyes wide with a manic desperation that belonged in a psychiatric ward rather than a suburban family home. Clara swallowed hard, tasting copper and fear at the back of her tongue. The heavy weight of her advanced pregnancy pressed against her diaphragm, making every breath a calculated struggle. She could feel the baby shifting inside her, reacting to the violent adrenaline flooding her bloodstream. Mark shifted his weight, his jaw clenching so hard muscles ticked in his cheek. He raised a fist, hesitation flickering in his dark eyes for a fraction of a second before the cruel conditioning of his mother’s voice washed it away. Clara knew that if she didn't move, if she didn't find a way out of this trap, the consequences would be catastrophic for both her and the child growing inside her. The phone in her hand buzzed violently against her palm, a text notification lighting up the dark screen with a name that could change everything. Mark lunged forward, his hand reaching out to grab the device, but Clara twisted her body, using the wall for leverage. The hallway felt miles long, an inescapable tunnel of malice and betrayal. She had to survive the next ten seconds.
