Chapter 8

Julian gestured for Charlotte to sit, his hands trembling slightly as he folded a pristine linen napkin on the sticky tabletop. He looked years older than when she had last seen him at a charity gala six months ago; the sharp, confident banker had been replaced by a haunted, exhausted man running out of time.
"Thank you for coming, Charlotte," Julian whispered, leaning forward so his voice wouldn't carry across the half-empty room. "I know how risky this is for you, considering the pending litigation with Arthur. But I couldn't sleep at night knowing what I know."
Charlotte kept her hands folded neatly on the table, her expression neutral and guarded. "Cut to the chase, Julian. What does Arthur have to do with underground loans?"
Julian swallowed hard, taking a sip of his cold coffee before speaking. "Two months before you filed for divorce, Arthur approached me outside regular banking hours. He needed a bridge loan of one million dollars immediately to cover a catastrophic loss at an underground high-stakes poker club downtown. When I told him the bank’s internal compliance protocols would flag the transfer instantly, he didn't back down. Instead, he brought in a third party—a private lending syndicate operated by a man named Viktor Vance, no relation to your lawyer."
Charlotte felt a cold chill run down her spine, though her face betrayed nothing. "Loan sharks."
"Worse," Julian corrected, his voice dropping to a gravelly murmur. "Professional syndicates that use corporate fronts to launder capital. Arthur forged your signature on a secondary deed of trust for your ancestral vacation home in Vermont, using it as primary collateral for the loan. The syndicate holds the note, Charlotte. And because the asset freeze Judge Holloway ordered has locked Arthur’s liquid funds, those creditors aren't getting their interest payments. They’re coming after the collateral. They’re coming after your property."
Charlotte’s mind raced, processing the devastating implications of the revelation. Arthur hadn't just been reckless; he had committed systemic mortgage fraud and exposed her family’s most cherished generational asset to violent criminals. "Does Marcus Vance know about this deed?"
"Not yet," Julian replied, pulling a bulky manila envelope from beneath his briefcase and sliding it across the table. "These are the certified copies of the forged transaction records, along with the communication logs between Arthur and Viktor Vance’s associates. Take them, file an emergency injunction for mortgage fraud, and get law enforcement involved immediately. Arthur isn't just fighting a divorce anymore; he’s stepped into a world he can't control."

Before Charlotte could reach for the envelope, the bell above the café door chimed. A tall man in a dark overcoat stepped inside, scanning the room with cold, calculating eyes. He didn't look like a normal patron; his posture was rigid, his gaze locking onto Julian with an intensity that made the air in the room drop ten degrees. Julian turned pale, his breath catching in his throat as he pushed the envelope harder toward Charlotte.
"Go," Julian whispered frantically. "He’s here. They found us."
