Chapter 5

The family court corridor smelled of floor wax and quiet desperation. Fluorescent lights hummed overhead, casting a harsh glare on the faux-wood benches where plaintiffs and defendants sat in tense anticipation. Arthur sat three benches down, flanked by his high-priced divorce attorney, a sharp-faced man named Sterling whose tailored suit couldn't hide his visible sweat. Arthur looked different today. The effortless arrogance that had defined him in the dining room was gone, replaced by a twitchy, panicked energy. His dark suit jacket was slightly rumpled, and he kept checking his phone, likely discovering that his credit cards were still declining at every high-end retailer in the city.
Charlotte approached with measured, deliberate steps. She wasn't alone; Marcus Vance walked beside her, carrying a leather briefcase packed with the financial noose they had tightened around Arthur’s neck over the past week. Skyler was safely tucked away at a private day-program with a trusted tutor, shielded entirely from the legal circus. When Arthur saw Charlotte approach, he stood up abruptly, his face flushed with a mixture of rage and feigned betrayal.
"Charlotte! Have you lost your absolute mind?" Arthur hissed, taking a step toward her before Sterling grabbed his sleeve and yanked him back onto the bench. "Freezing my accounts? Telling the police I’m a flight risk? Do you have any idea how humiliating this is for me at the club?"
Charlotte stopped a few feet away, looking down at him with an expression of profound pity that stung him far worse than any insult could have. "You humiliated yourself the moment you decided to use our daughter as a pawn, Arthur. You thought you could bleed me dry while hiding behind your mother’s skirts. The judge is going to see every single wire transfer, every offshore account, and every text message you sent to your creditors."
"It was business diversification!" Arthur stammered, his voice cracking slightly as a court bailiff opened the heavy double doors at the end of the corridor. "Families protect each other! You’re destroying everything we built!"
"We didn't build anything, Arthur," Charlotte replied coldly. "You consumed. Now, pay the bill."
Judge Holloway’s courtroom was austere and quiet. The air smelled of old paper and furniture polish. As both parties took their seats at opposing counsel tables, Judge Holloway adjusted his half-moon spectacles and reviewed the emergency filings. His expression grew darker with every page he turned. He didn't look at Arthur with curiosity; he looked at him with judicial contempt. The photographic evidence of Skyler’s meager meal, contrasted with the exorbitant restaurant receipts from Arthur’s credit card statement on the exact same evening, painted an indefensible portrait of neglect and malice.
"Mr. Sterling," Judge Holloway said, his voice deep and resonant, cutting through the tense silence of the room. "Before we discuss asset distribution or temporary spousal support, I am reviewing an emergency injunction regarding child welfare and parental alienation. Your client’s defense seems to rest on the assertion that his wife is being unreasonable. However, the financial disclosures provided by Mrs. Vance’s legal team indicate that Mr. Vance has systematically diverted over six hundred thousand dollars of marital funds into unregistered personal accounts while simultaneously restricting basic household provisions for his minor child. How do you plead to these findings?"

Sterling swallowed hard, shuffling papers frantically. "Your Honor, we request a thirty-day continuance to review these forensic audits—"
"Motion denied," Judge Holloway interrupted flatly. "Effective immediately, sole temporary custody is granted to Mrs. Vance. Mr. Vance is ordered out of the primary residential property within twenty-four hours, and all remaining joint accounts are placed under court-appointed receivership. Court is adjourned."
