Chapter 3

Morning light flooded the hotel suite, painting long golden rectangles across the plush gray carpet. Skyler was fast asleep, curled into a tight ball with the duvet pulled up to her chin, her breathing soft and even. Charlotte stood by the small kitchenette area, nursing a cup of black coffee she had brewed herself. She had been awake since dawn, reviewing legal briefs sent securely by her attorney, Marcus Vance. The dossier was staggering in its thoroughness. Arthur hadn't just been draining their shared accounts; he had been systematically forging her signature on property transfers, attempting to strip her of her independent inheritance before she caught on. His arrogance had blinded him to the digital footprints he left behind.
Her phone buzzed softly on the granite counter. It was a text from Marcus: Preliminary asset freeze approved by Judge Holloway. He can't touch the corporate accounts or the primary residential holdings as of 8:00 AM. How is Skyler?
Charlotte typed a quick reply: She’s sleeping. We’re safe. Ready when you are.
She looked down at her attire, having washed her cream wrap dress by hand in the sink and dried it with the hotel hair dryer. She refused to let Arthur see her looking defeated. Around nine o'clock, Skyler stirred, blinking sleepily against the morning brightness. True to her word, Charlotte ordered room service—a massive spread of buttermilk pancakes, fresh berries, and scrambled eggs. Watching Skyler eat with genuine appetite, without the oppressive shadow of her grandmother’s critical gaze or Arthur’s mocking presence, filled Charlotte with a fierce, protective pride. This was what peace tasted like. But peace in a high-stakes divorce was merely the eye of the hurricane.
By noon, the tranquility was shattered by a pounding at the door of the adjoining suite hallway. Charlotte motioned for Skyler to stay in the bedroom with her tablet and walked cautiously to the peephole. It wasn't Arthur. It was his mother, Eleanor, looking immaculate in a tailored navy pantsuit, her expression a mask of manufactured outrage. Eleanor’s silver-streaked hair was pulled back into a severe chignon, and her posture screamed entitled indignation. Charlotte took a steadying breath, unlocked the deadbolt, and pulled the door open just wide enough to block the entrance, refusing to invite the matriarch inside.
"Charlotte, what on earth is this foolishness?" Eleanor demanded, stepping forward without an invitation, forcing Charlotte to hold her ground. "Arthur is beside himself. You’ve embarrassed him in front of his associates, and now some frozen-asset notification has locked his personal debit card at the country club. Do you have any idea how scandalous this looks for our family name?"
Charlotte leaned against the doorframe, her posture relaxed yet immovable. She looked down at her former mother-in-law with a chilling neutrality that completely derailed Eleanor’s rehearsed script. "Your family name died the moment you and your son decided to starve my daughter to fund his lifestyle while skimming from my trust. Save the theatrics, Eleanor. I’m not coming back."

Eleanor’s face flushed a mottled red, her veneer of polished elegance cracking instantly. "You ungrateful little brat! Without Arthur, you’re just an emotionally stunted corporate drone who couldn't keep a marriage together. He will take you to the cleaners in court. He’ll take custody, he’ll take the house, and you’ll leave with nothing!"
"He is welcome to try," Charlotte replied softly, her voice carrying an edge of absolute steel. "Tell him to check his email. Marcus Vance has already filed the asset freeze, along with the motion for emergency custody based on child neglect. If you ever speak to my daughter again, you’ll be doing it through a plexiglass partition. Now, get out of my hallway."
