Chapter 4

The glass-walled conference room on the forty-second floor of the Vance & Sterling Law Firm offered a panoramic view of the city skyline, but Charlotte couldn't spare a glance for the scenery. Across the sleek walnut table sat Marcus Vance, a seasoned attorney with silver-streaked temples and eyes that missed nothing, flanked by two junior associates buried under stacks of financial ledgers. On the projector screen behind them, a complex web of shell companies, cryptocurrency wallets, and high-stakes poker debts flickered under Arthur’s name. The sheer scale of his deception was breathtaking. He hadn't just been draining their joint accounts; he had been systematically liquidating assets to prepare for a clean getaway to Europe with his mistress, a socialite half his age whom Charlotte had foolishly dismissed as a harmless flirtation.

"He’s desperate," Marcus said, tapping a stylus against the table. "Our emergency asset freeze hit him right as he was attempting to transfer four hundred thousand dollars from your development trust into a Cayman Islands holding. The bank flagged it immediately because of the preliminary injunction we filed yesterday morning."

"Will the court uphold the freeze permanently?" Charlotte asked, her voice calm and measured as she adjusted the cuffs of her dark blazer. She had discarded the cream wrap dress for a sharp, charcoal-gray suit that signaled she was back on her own turf—the corporate battlefield.

"Absolute certainty," Marcus nodded, leaning back in his leather chair. "Judge Holloway has zero tolerance for dissipation of marital assets, especially when minor children are involved. Furthermore, the photographic evidence and pediatrician notes regarding Skyler’s mandated diet—which we corroborated with the household staff’s text logs—give us enormous leverage on the custody front. Arthur cannot claim this was a loving household. He’s exposed on multiple fronts."

The heavy oak doors of the conference room swung open without warning, and a paralegal rushed in, breathless and wide-eyed. "Mr. Vance, you need to see this. Arthur just filed an emergency motion to compel mediation, claiming Charlotte abducted their daughter and demanding immediate visitation rights at the estate."

Marcus didn't even blink. He let out a dry, humorless chuckle. "Standard panic response. He’s thrashing because he realizes the gravy train has derailed. Charlotte, how do you want to play this? We can drag him through a brutal public deposition, or we can use his corporate embezzlement threats to force an immediate, unconditioned settlement where you retain sole custody and full ownership of the properties."

Charlotte stood up, walking slowly toward the floor-to-ceiling window. Below her, tiny cars crawled along the asphalt arteries of the metropolis. She thought of Skyler sitting in the hotel playroom, painting watercolors with a genuine smile on her face for the first time in months. She thought of the red cup of instant noodles, the calculated humiliation, the casual cruelty of a man who viewed his own child as collateral damage. There was no room for mercy here. Mercy with Arthur was just an invitation for further manipulation.

"I don't want a quiet settlement," Charlotte said, turning around, her gaze locking onto Marcus with unyielding clarity. "I want a public reckoning. Let him file his motion. Let him stand in front of Judge Holloway and explain why he was dining on gourmet crab while his seven-year-old daughter was being fed processed sodium under his mother’s orders. Strip him of everything, Marcus. Every car, every credit card, every illusion of status he’s built on my back. Let him experience what it means to have nothing."
