Chapter 6

The rain fell harder now, turning the pine needles beneath Chloe’s feet into a slippery mire. She forced herself to keep moving, her left ankle throbbing with every step as she limped deeper into the forest. The satellite phone in her hand continued to vibrate intermittently, flashing warnings about low battery life and signal interference.

Suddenly, the beam of a high-intensity flashlight cut through the dense foliage ahead, painting the trunks of the trees in stark white light. Chloe froze, pressing herself flat against the massive trunk of an ancient oak. She held her breath, straining her ears over the steady patter of raindrops hitting the canopy above.

"I know you're in this sector, kid," a gruff, unfamiliar voice called out through the trees. It wasn't Julian. This voice belonged to someone hardened, accustomed to field work and physical intimidation. "The boss wants the phone intact. Walk out now, and nobody gets hurt."

Chloe clutched the device tightly against her chest. She knew that "nobody gets hurt" was a lie designed to coax her out into the open. She looked around frantically for another escape route, but the forest opened up into a steep ravine on her right, its rocky slope slick with mud and dead leaves.

The footsteps grew closer, the crunch of boots on twigs sounding dangerously near. The flashlight beam swept across the very tree trunk behind which she was hiding, illuminating the damp fabric of her torn grey t-shirt.

"Found you," the man muttered, stepping around the thicket with a heavy tactical vest over a dark rain jacket. He was broad-shouldered, with a scarred jaw and cold, calculating eyes.

Before he could raise his hand to grab her, a low rumble of a motorcycle engine vibrated through the wet earth of the ravine. A sleek, matte-black dual-sport bike crested the ridge behind the operative, its headlight suddenly blinding the man with a searing burst of LED illumination.

A figure clad in reinforced riding gear leaped from the moving bike, tackling the operative to the muddy ground with a heavy, bone-crunching thud. The man shouted in surprise as his flashlight flew from his grip, spinning off into the darkness.

"Get on the back, Chloe! Now!" shouted a firm, feminine voice from beneath a dark helmet visor.

Chloe didn't hesitate. She scrambled across the muddy incline and threw her leg over the back of the motorcycle, wrapping her arms tightly around the rider's waist just as the machine roared to life. The rear tire spun in the mud, throwing a spray of dirt into the air as the bike rocketed forward along a hidden dirt maintenance trail, leaving the stunned operative behind in the rainy gloom.
