Chapter 1

The polished white marble floor of the grand foyer offered no traction for the frantic sneakers of twelve-year-old Chloe. Her brown ponytail whipped against the back of her grey cotton t-shirt as her denim shorts brushed against her knees with every desperate stride. The heavy oak front doors loomed ahead, secured by a smart-lock system that required a digital code she had never memorized. Behind her, the sharp clicking of heels on stone echoed like descending gunshots through the vaulted neoclassical hallway.
Chloe risked a single glance over her shoulder. Standing near the towering white floral arrangement resting upon a carved marble pillar, Elena Vance looked nothing like a grieving widow or a sophisticated socialite. The elegant woman in the black sleeveless dress radiated a cold, predatory fury. Her intricate updo remained immaculate, but her jaw was clenched so tightly that the muscles twitched beneath her powdered skin. On her left hand, the massive diamond ring caught the crystal chandelier light, flashing a blinding, cruel brilliance that seemed to mock Chloe's terror.
Emerging from the shadowy corridor behind Elena, Julian Vance stepped into the amber light of the foyer. Tall, imposing, and impeccably dressed in a dark bespoke suit, a crisp white shirt, and a straight black tie, Julian moved with terrifying deliberation. He did not run. He did not need to. His stern, unreadable expression suggested a man who viewed human lives as mere variables in a financial equation. Julian adjusted his gold-trimmed wristwatch, his dark eyes locking onto Chloe with chilling detachment.
"Stop running, child," Julian said, his baritone voice cutting through the cavernous space without raising above a conversational murmur. "You are only making the inevitable much more exhausting for yourself."
Chloe reached the heavy front doors and threw her entire weight against the brass panic bar, but it held firm. The security protocol had been activated from the master study. Panic tightened her throat, turning her breath into shallow, ragged gasps. She pressed her back against the cool wooden panels, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.
Elena closed the distance with predatory grace, stopping ten feet away. Her diamond ring gleamed as she raised a manicured hand, pointing a sharp acrylic fingernail straight at Chloe's chest. "You were never supposed to look inside that ledger, you ungrateful little parasite," Elena hissed, her voice trembling with suppressed rage. "Everything your father built belongs to this house now. To us."

Chloe shook her head violently, tears finally spilling over her lashes to streak down her flushed cheeks. "My dad knew you were stealing from the foundation," she whispered, her voice cracking. "He left everything to me."
Julian stepped up beside Elena, placing a heavy, possessive hand on his wife's bare shoulder. His gaze remained glacial. "Your father made a tragic mistake, Chloe. And accidents happen to people who refuse to cooperate."
