Chapter 3

Chloe hurried across the concrete floor, her sneakers squeaking softly in the dead silence of the subterranean vault. She reached the oak desk and pressed her trembling thumb against the glass scanner of the satellite phone. For a tense second, the device flashed a harsh red light, accompanied by an ominous warning tone. Chloe swallowed hard, remembering the day her father had registered her biometric profile during a weekend visit to his office. She pressed down harder, aligning her whorls precisely with the sensor.

The screen blinked green. The warning tone ceased, replaced by a steady, muted chime indicating a secure connection to an external relay. A list of encrypted files populated the high-resolution display, alongside a flashing notification bubble from an unknown contact labeled simply "The Sentinel."

Before Chloe could tap the screen to open the message, a heavy metallic clang echoed from the top of the spiral staircase. The muffled sound of drilling vibrated through the ceiling ducts. Julian and Elena had bypassed the manual lock and were systematically cutting through the steel reinforcement plates. They were coming down, and they had brought industrial tools to ensure nothing would stand in their way.

Chloe’s breath hitched. She looked around the cramped alcove for a secondary exit. A heavy steel emergency hatch was set into the far wall, fitted with a heavy red turn-wheel handle. She sprinted toward it, grabbing the wheel with both hands and throwing her weight into a counter-clockwise spin. The gears groaned with rusted resistance, refusing to budge an inch. The mechanism was rusted shut from decades of disuse.

Panic threatened to paralyze her, but she forced herself to breathe, recalling the lessons her father had taught her about mechanical leverage. She grabbed a heavy steel wrench from a nearby tool caddy and wedged it between the spokes of the wheel, using it as an extension of her own strength. With a grunt of effort, she heaved upward.

The heavy metal seals cracked open with a loud pop, releasing a hiss of compressed air that smelled of ozone and damp earth. Through the widening gap, she could see a glimmer of pale moonlight filtering down through a concrete storm drain grate that opened into the mansion’s overgrown rear gardens.

Behind her, the grinding whine of a circular saw tore through the air, showering sparks down from the ceiling hatch above the spiral staircase. The metal door was giving way. Julian’s boots hit the bottom steps with a heavy, deliberate thud, accompanied by Elena’s cold, demanding voice echoing down the corridor.

Chloe didn't wait to see them emerge. She squeezed through the half-open security hatch, tumbling out into the muddy grass of the garden just as the heavy footsteps reached the far end of the archive room.
