Chapter 10: The Safehouse Ruins

As the roar of the river faded slightly behind them, Arthur led Chloe and Sarah out of the concrete culvert and up a steep embankment that led to an abandoned railway maintenance shed. The corrugated metal structure was rusted and half-collapsed, but it offered dry shelter from the relentless rain and complete concealment from aerial drones.
They collapsed onto a stack of wooden pallets, shivering from the cold water that soaked through their clothes. Sarah kept watch near the rusted sliding door, her pistol held ready at her side while she scanned the overgrown tracks with a pair of military-grade thermal binoculars.
"They burned the safehouse," Sarah reported quietly, her voice devoid of panic, though hardened by experience. "I can see the thermal signatures through the trees. They brought incendiary charges. They're trying to erase every trace of the archive."
Arthur sat beside Chloe, wrapping the woolen blanket tighter around her shoulders while rubbing her cold hands between his own. "Are you alright, sweetheart? Did you get hurt during the breach?"
Chloe nodded slowly, her teeth chattering slightly from the chill. "I'm okay, Dad. Just cold. But... what do we do now? They destroyed everything you worked on."
"Not everything," Arthur said, tapping the waterproof aluminum briefcase he had managed to salvage during the firefight. "The primary physical drives are right here. Every transaction, every shell company, every name. But having the data isn't enough anymore. Julian and Elena are moving faster than the federal oversight committees can process warrants. If we want to stop them, we have to cut off their access to the offshore accounts before they liquidate everything and flee the country."
"And how do we do that without the diamond ring?" Sarah asked, lowering her binoculars to look at Arthur. "You said yourself, that ring is the physical cryptographic token required to unlock the primary vault."
Chloe looked down at her hands, her mind racing back to the moment she had fled through the grand foyer of the mansion. She remembered the massive white floral arrangement resting upon the marble pillar near where Elena had stood, and the way the diamond ring had flashed under the crystal chandelier.
"I saw it," Chloe said softly, drawing their attention. "When I was running away from the foyer, Elena was wearing the ring, but... she took it off."
Arthur frowned, leaning closer. "What do you mean she took it off, Chloe? Are you sure?"

"Yes," Chloe insisted, picturing the scene in her mind with vivid clarity. "The band was slightly too large for her finger because she was nervous. When she pointed at me, it slipped halfway off. She pulled it completely off her hand and dropped it right into the heavy ceramic base of the white floral arrangement on the pillar before Julian walked in."
Sarah’s eyes widened slightly in realization. "She ditched the token temporarily so she wouldn't risk losing it during the scuffle, or she planned to retrieve it once the guards secured the perimeter."
