Chapter 4

The cool night air hit Chloe’s face like a physical blow as she scrambled out of the storm drain and into the dense foliage bordering the Vance estate. Rain had begun to drizzle, turning the freshly mulched flower beds into slick obstacles that threatened her footing. She clutched the satellite phone tightly in her right hand, its green screen casting a faint, eerie glow against her grey t-shirt.

Behind her, the security hatch swung wide open with a metallic screech. A beam of blinding white light cut through the darkness, sweeping across the lawn as Julian scanned the garden with a high-powered tactical flashlight.

"I know you're out there, Chloe," Julian’s voice carried across the damp grass, smooth and terrifyingly calm. "You cannot outrun the property line. The perimeter gates are locked, and the local authorities answer to our payroll. Come back inside, and we can discuss your father's estate like civilized people."

Chloe crouched low behind a dense row of boxwood hedges, her heart pounding so violently she feared they could hear it over the sound of the rain. She knew Julian was lying about the police. Her father had spent the last six months documenting a massive money-laundering conspiracy involving corrupt municipal officials and Julian’s shell companies. If she was caught, the "accident" they had planned for her would look like a tragic drowning in the estate’s swimming pool.

She looked down at the satellite phone in her hand. The encrypted message from "The Sentinel" was still pulsing on the display. With trembling fingers, she tapped the icon to open the transmission. A text-based prompt appeared on the screen, requiring a voice passphrase that her father had established before his sudden disappearance three days ago.

“The raven flies at midnight,” she whispered into the microphone port, her voice barely audible over the rustle of the wind-blown leaves.

The phone vibrated sharply in her palm. A synthetic voice replied instantly: "Identity confirmed, Heir Vance. Transmission decryption in progress. Stand by for coordinates."

A map of the city’s coastal industrial district materialized on the screen, with a single blinking red dot indicating a secure safehouse located less than two miles from the estate. But as the map loaded, a sharp red warning banner flashed across the top of the display: GPS TRACKER ACTIVE ON SATELLITE RELAY. UNKNOWN SIGNAL INTERCEPTION DETECTED.

Chloe’s blood ran cold. Julian hadn't just cut through the security door; he had deployed a localized signal jammer that was actively broadcasting her exact location back to his handheld console.

A sharp rustling sound erupted from the bushes just ten feet to her left. The beam of the tactical flashlight sliced through the boxwood branches, illuminating the rain-slicked grass right where she knelt.
