Chapter 6: The Root of the Flame

Ryan set the knife down on the tray. He took a deep breath, letting the harsh truth out into the quiet room.

""I was scared, Clara,"" Ryan admitted, his voice barely audible. ""Every morning you go into those high-tech high-rises, and every shift I put on my turnout gear... I live in constant fear that one day one of us isn't coming home. I pulled away because I thought distance would make it hurt less if the worst happened.""

Clara turned her eyes toward him, softened by understanding. She reached out and touched his cheek, tracing the small cut near his cheekbone.

""Hiding from love doesn't protect you from pain, Ryan,"" she said softly. ""It just steals the precious time we actually have.""
