Chapter 1: The Weight of Steel

The siren's echo faded into the cold damp night, but inside the server room, time seemed to stand still. Ryan cradled Clara against his chest, feeling the weak, erratic rise and fall of her ribs. Seven long hours under the twisted metal had stripped away her energy, but not her breath—not her heartbeat.

Around them, the rescue team scrambled. Ryan’s partner, Mark, stared in utter disbelief. He had worked alongside Ryan for three years, knowing him as a quiet, disciplined firefighter who kept his personal life behind locked doors. Nobody on the squad knew Ryan was married. Nobody knew his wife was the lead engineer trapped inside the burning tech complex.

""Get the stretcher!"" Ryan barked, his voice raw and cracking. His hands, bruised and covered in soot, gently swept dust off Clara’s forehead. ""Now, Mark! Move!""

Mark snapped back to reality, signaling the paramedics waiting in the hallway. As they carefully lifted Clara onto the gurney, her fingers slipped from Ryan's jacket, leaving a faint streak of ash on his uniform. ""Stay with me, Clara,"" Ryan whispered, his tough facade crumbling into pure desperation. ""Please, just hold on.""
