Back at the Vance residence, Julian struggled to keep Lily’s world from collapsing. The five-year-old sat at the kitchen counter, coloring a picture of a house with dark storm clouds overhead.
"Daddy, did Grandma hurt Noah and Liam?" Lily asked suddenly, her crayon pausing mid-stroke.
Julian placed a bowl of warm soup in front of her and sat down beside her, choosing honesty over patronizing comfort. "Grandma did very bad things, Lily. She was very sick in her heart. But you did something brave today. You told the truth."
"Grandma said if I told, the bad men would take Teddy away," Lily whispered, clutching her stuffed bear to her chest.
Julian gently pulled her onto his lap, kissing her forehead. "No one is taking anything from you ever again. You saved our family, sweetheart."
