Chapter 14: A Final Visit**
A year later, Julian received a formal letter from the Department of Corrections. Evelyn Vance was suffering from terminal heart failure and had requested a final visitation before being moved to hospice care.
Julian debated for days before driving to the state penitentiary. He sat behind the thick glass partition as his mother was wheeled in, frail, gray, and stripped of all her former grandeur.
"You came," Evelyn rasped, her voice thin. "I wanted to give you my blessing, Julian... to tell you I forgive you for betraying our name."
Julian stared at the broken woman across the glass with quiet pity, completely free from the anger that had once consumed him.
"I didn't come for your blessing, Mother," Julian said evenly. "And I didn't come to argue. I came to tell you that Lily is happy, Claire’s memory is cherished, and your cruelty ends with you. You will die alone in this room, but out there, love has already won."
