Chapter 7: The Ambush On Fifth Avenue

The tires of Marcus’s town car screamed in protest, burning rubber against the asphalt as the heavy vehicle skidded violently toward the rear bumper of the black SUV. Sarah was thrown forward against her seatbelt, the fabric digging painfully into her shoulder as the car came to a shuddering halt just inches from a catastrophic collision. The air inside the cabin filled with the acrid smell of scorched rubber and ozone.
"What the hell is this?!" Marcus shouted, his face flushing a furious crimson as he threw the gearshift into park and gripped the steering wheel so hard his knuckles turned white.
Before Marcus could reach for his phone to dial emergency services, the doors of the black SUV flew open. Two men in dark suits and sunglasses stepped out onto the street, moving with a synchronized, militaristic precision that suggested professional training rather than random road rage. The larger of the two men walked deliberately toward the driver’s side window of Marcus’s car, ignoring the blaring horns of the morning commuters piling up behind them.
"Stay inside, lock your doors," Marcus hissed, his voice dropping into a frantic whisper as he reached instinctively into his glove compartment.
Sarah didn't move. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird, but her mind remained ice-cold and laser-focused. She looked past the massive frame of the man approaching the driver's side and spotted the black sedan idling fifty yards back, blocking the lane behind them to prevent any vehicles from reversing or escaping. This wasn't road rage. This was a targeted, military-grade intercept.
The man in the suit reached the driver's side window and slammed his heavy palm flat against the reinforced glass, sending a dull, echoing shockwave through the cabin.
"Mr. Vance!" the man called out, his voice muffled through the glass but carrying an undeniable edge of authority. "Step out of the vehicle with your hands where we can see them. This isn't a negotiation."
Marcus pulled a small, heavy silver legal seal from the glove compartment, his hand trembling slightly. "Get out of here, Sarah," he muttered under his breath, keeping his eyes on the man outside. "Run toward the subway entrance two blocks down. Don't look back."
"I'm not leaving you here, Marcus," Sarah said, her voice steady and absolute, cutting through the panic in the car like steel.
Before Marcus could argue further, the passenger-side door was yanked violently open from the outside. The second man in the suit stood there, his sunglasses reflecting the harsh morning sun, his hand reaching inside to grab Sarah by the wrist with crushing force.
"Out," the man growled, his grip tightening until Sarah felt bones grinding together. "Now."
Instead of screaming or pulling away, Sarah used her entire body weight to drive her heel straight down onto the attacker's instep while simultaneously snapping her elbow backward into his diaphragm. The man grunted in sudden, blinding pain, his grip loosening just enough for Sarah to wrench her arm free and slide across the center console toward the driver's side.

"Drive, Marcus!" Sarah screamed, grabbing the gearshift and slamming it back into drive while stomping her own foot down over Marcus’s on the accelerator.
The town car leaped forward with a deafening roar, its front bumper scraping violently along the side of the black SUV as it forced its way through the narrow gap between the vehicle and the concrete sidewalk, leaving the two stunned operatives standing stranded in the middle of Fifth Avenue.
