Chapter 1: The Ash And The Ultimatum

The morning sunlight sliced through the cracked windows of the modern living room, illuminating floating motes of ash that danced in the sterile air. Sarah stood barefoot on the engineered hardwood flooring, her olive-green shirt stained with the soot of a room that had nearly consumed her life hours earlier. On her left cheek, a dark crescent of carbon smudged her skin like a brand of survival. Across from her, Eleanor—fifty years old, encased in a pristine beige blouse and matching trousers that screamed designer wealth—puffed her chest out in pure, unfiltered dominance. Her face flushed a mottled crimson as she reared back and hurled a grey cleaning rag directly at Sarah’s face. The damp fabric struck Sarah’s cheekbone with a wet slap, leaving a streak of grey sludge over the soot.

"Clean this house or get out!" Eleanor shrieked, her voice cracking with venomous authority as she pointed a manicured finger toward the scorched corner of the open-concept kitchen.

Sarah did not flinch, nor did she raise her voice to match the frantic pitch vibrating through the room. With deliberate, agonizing slowness, she reached up and plucked the grey rag from where it had fallen against her chest. She brought the rough fabric up, wiped the ash and grime from her cheek in a single smooth motion, and stared back at Eleanor with a terrifyingly calm, defiant expression that made the older woman step back half a pace. Eleanor’s chest heaved under her beige silk. Seizing the rag back from Sarah’s loose grip, Eleanor furiously wiped her own mouth as if trying to scrub away the very taste of Sarah’s defiance, her eyes wide with a manic mix of shock and unhinged rage.

"Daniel bought this house!" Eleanor screamed, spraying saliva as her composure completely fractured under the weight of Sarah's unsettling tranquility.

Sarah stood completely tall, her shoulders squared, looking down slightly with a confident, knowing smile playing at the corners of her lips. In the background near the arched doorway, Linda—a sixty-year-old woman in a dark blue dress—wringed her hands together, her face a mask of anxious observation.

"No," Sarah said softly, letting the silence stretch for a beat before driving the words home. "This house belongs to me. My name is the sole owner."

Linda gasped softly in the background, her eyes widening with a sudden, crushing wave of realization. Eleanor’s face contorted instantly into a mask of pure, hideous horror and cold disbelief, her jaw slackening.

"Linda…" Eleanor choked out, her voice dropping to a trembling, frantic whisper as she whipped her head toward the older woman in the blue dress. "You said Sarah didn't know…"
