Chapter 6: The Watcher In The Sedan

The sleek black sedan sat idling quietly beneath the sprawling branches of an ancient oak tree, two houses down from the burnt-out shell of Daniel’s modern estate. Inside the vehicle, the air conditioning hummed softly, cutting through the humid morning heat. In the driver’s seat sat a man in his late forties, wearing a tailored charcoal suit that looked far too expensive for a sleepy suburban side street. His fingers tapped a slow, rhythmic tattoo against the leather-wrapped steering wheel as he watched Sarah and Marcus emerge from the front door and climb into the lawyer’s gray town car.
On the passenger seat lay an open laptop displaying a live-feed floor plan of the Union Trust downtown facility, alongside a digital copy of Daniel’s original corporate charter. The man picked up a burner phone resting in the center console, his thumb hovering over the keypad before pressing a pre-programmed speed dial.
The phone rang twice before a raspy, irritated voice answered on the other end.
"Talk to me," a gravelly voice snapped through the speaker.
"They're moving," the man in the sedan said smoothly, his eyes locked on Marcus’s car as it pulled away from the curb and headed toward the main boulevard. "Vance and the girl just left the house. They've got the key."
A sharp intake of breath hissed through the earpiece on the other end. "Are you positive? Did you see it?"
"I saw Vance slip something into his pocket before they got into the vehicle," the man replied, shifting the sedan into gear and letting it roll forward silently without turning on the headlights. "They're heading downtown. Looks like Union Trust."
"Damn it," the voice cursed violently. "If she opens that box, everything we’ve built over the last ten years goes up in smoke—and I don't mean from a kitchen fire. Cut them off before they reach the financial district."
"That's outside the scope of our original agreement, boss," the man in the sedan said, a cold, predatory smile touching the corners of his lips. "Interfering with a lawyer and a primary beneficiary within city limits requires a higher hazard fee."
"Name your price," the voice snapped back instantly. "Just make sure that key never touches the lock."
The line clicked dead. The man in the sedan tossed the burner phone onto the passenger seat, stepped hard on the accelerator, and pulled out into the sparse morning traffic, maintaining a safe, calculated distance behind Marcus’s town car.
Inside the town car, Sarah stared out the passenger window, watching the familiar suburban storefronts blur into the dense, towering concrete architecture of the downtown financial district. Her reflection stared back at her from the tinted glass—the dark smudge of soot still faintly visible on her cheekbone beneath a light layer of dust.
"Are you alright, Sarah?" Marcus asked gently, keeping his eyes fixed on the road ahead as he navigated a sharp turn onto Fifth Avenue. "You've been quiet for the last three miles."
"I'm just thinking about what Eleanor said right before the police took her," Sarah murmured, not turning away from the window. "She was so desperate, Marcus. People only panic like that when they know their entire foundation is about to collapse."
"Eleanor was a parasite," Marcus replied flatly, his jaw tightening. "She latched onto Daniel during his final year when he was too weak to fight her off. She thought she could wait him out, take the house, and liquidate his holdings before anyone noticed she was bleeding the accounts dry."
"It wasn't just Eleanor," Sarah said, her voice dropping to a near-whisper. "Linda was too terrified. Not just of the fire, but of something else. Something she thinks is still out there."

Marcus glanced sideways at her, a frown creasing his forehead. "What do you mean?"
Before Sarah could answer, a massive black SUV surged out of a side alley without signaling, cutting directly across two lanes of traffic and slamming on its brakes right in front of Marcus's town car, forcing the lawyer to slam his foot onto the brake pedal with terrifying force.
