Chapter 12: Ashes Of The Past

The digital countdown timer on the wall flashed 02:20, its glaring red numbers casting an unearthly glow over the concrete floor. Sarah stood frozen, the blood roaring in her ears like a rising tide. The casual mention of her parents' fire—an event that had claimed her childhood home and left her an orphan at age ten—was a lockbox she had kept buried beneath decades of survival and grief. Daniel had known. He had known all along. That was why he had built this fortress; that was why he had gathered the evidence against Vanguard Industries.

Julian Thorne straightened his jacket, his composure partially recovered as he watched the visible shock ripple through Sarah’s usually impenetrable exterior. He gave a sharp, imperceptible nod to his tactical team, signaling them to hold their positions while the clock ticked closer to zero.

"You thought Daniel picked you up off the street because he fell in love with a nurse, didn't you?" Julian said smoothly, his voice carrying a cruel, theatrical cadence. "He was hunting us, Sarah. And he used you as bait from the very first day he met you at the hospital. He knew who your parents were before you even remembered their faces."

Marcus grabbed Sarah’s shoulder gently, his face pale with alarm. "Don't listen to him, Sarah. It’s a psychological ploy. He’s trying to break your focus before the transmission hits the gateway."

"It’s not a ploy, Marcus," Sarah whispered, her voice trembling slightly before hardening back into cold steel. She looked down at her hands, remembering the warmth of Daniel’s final days, the quiet conversations they shared in the study, the way he had looked at her with a mixture of profound love and bottomless guilt. He hadn't just been a dying man clinging to life; he had been a man seeking redemption for a sin he had carried for decades.

The clock clicked down: 01:15.

Mr. Henderson, still picking himself up from the concrete floor where his tablet had shattered, crawled toward the primary vault control console near the steel door. "Mrs. Vance," Henderson called out, his voice shaking with terror. "If you don't insert the brass key into the master cylinder right now, the system will execute an automatic purge of the vault contents to prevent corruption. We have less than a minute!"

Julian’s face tightened with sudden anxiety. The smug, arrogant smile vanished instantly. "Purge? What do you mean, purge?"

"The secondary security protocol," Henderson panted, wiping blood from a small scrape on his forehead. "If the dual-verification isn't completed before the countdown reaches zero, the physical vault incinerates its contents via an internal thermite charge."
