Chapter 11: The Countdown Begins

The amber strobe lights flashed in rhythmic, blinding pulses, painting the concrete pillars of the underground parking bay in a sickly, urgent glow. The digital countdown timer mounted above the main elevator bank clicked loudly, displaying large red numbers that began ticking downward from 05:00: five minutes until the automated data dump transmitted every encrypted file, financial ledger, and corporate confession from Daniel’s vault directly to federal servers and national media outlets.
Julian Thorne’s face contorted from aristocratic arrogance into a mask of pure, unadulterated panic. He took a sharp step forward, his hand dropping instinctively toward the arm of the lead tactical operative behind him.
"Shut it down!" Julian screamed, his voice cracking with desperation as the klaxons wailed overhead. "Override the system terminal, get into the sub-grid, and kill the transmission before it hits the external gateway!"
The lead operative broke formation, sprinting toward Mr. Henderson’s fallen tablet on the floor and smashing his tactical boot directly down onto the glass screen, splintering it into a thousand useless pieces. But the digital clock on the wall didn't stop. The numbers clicked down: 04:42.
"It's a decentralized mesh network, sir!" the operative shouted back over the deafening wail of the sirens. "The signal isn't running through local servers! It’s pinging off three different encrypted satellites! We can't reach the kill switch without the master decryption phrase!"
Sarah stood completely still amid the chaos, her olive-green shirt rustling in the draft kicked up by the ventilation system. She looked at Julian with an expression of cold, unrelenting pity.
"There is no decryption phrase, Julian," Sarah said calmly, her voice carrying easily over the alarms. "The moment the vault door swings open, the data packet is released automatically. The only way to stop the transmission is to close the vault permanently and surrender every share of Vanguard Industries back to the Daniel Vance Estate."
Julian whipped his head around, his eyes blazing with absolute fury as he stared down the barrel of total corporate ruin. He took two fast, aggressive steps toward Sarah, his hands curling into tight fists at his sides.
"You insane bitch!" Julian roared, forgetting his polished demeanor entirely as spittle flew from his lips. "You're destroying billions of dollars in infrastructure! You're destroying years of legitimate corporate development over a dead man's paranoia!"
Marcus stepped up beside Sarah, his hand tightening around the heavy legal seal in his pocket, ready to interpose his body between Sarah and the enraged director. "Back off, Julian! One more step and you're adding assault on an officer of the court to your federal indictment!"
Julian stopped just an arm's length away from Sarah, his chest heaving under his tailored charcoal suit. His face was twisted into a grotesque imitation of a smile, his eyes wild with desperate calculation.
"You think you've won, Sarah," Julian hissed, lowering his voice to a venomous whisper that only she and Marcus could hear. "You think destroying Vanguard saves you. But you don't know what Daniel took from us ten years ago. You don't know what's really sitting inside that box."
Sarah didn't flinch. She met his manic gaze with an unyielding wall of stone. "Try me, Julian."
"It's not money," Julian whispered, a dark, chilling smile spreading across his face as the digital clock clicked down to 03:15. "It's the names of every federal judge, senator, and corporate executive who funded the acquisition of your original family estate—the estate where your parents died in that 'accidental' fire thirty years ago."
Sarah’s breath hitched in her throat, the cold armor of her composure cracking for a single, devastating second as the words echoed in her ears.

"What did you say?" Sarah choked out, her voice dropping to a fragile whisper.
Julian laughed, a low, triumphant sound, as he stepped back toward his tactical team. "Open the box, Sarah. Let the whole world see who really burned your past to the ground."
