Chapter 9 - A Husband’s True Face

The air in the living room seemed to freeze, turning to ice as Daniel slowly lowered the iron fireplace poker until the heavy tip rested softly against the floorboards. He didn't run to Clara. He didn't scream in rage at the armed intruder standing a few feet away from his wife and child. Instead, Daniel let out a long, shuddering breath, straightening his wrinkled suit jacket with an unsettling, clinical detachment.

Clara remained frozen on the floor, clutching wailing little Maya to her chest. Her eyes darted from the gun in the intruder's hand to Daniel’s impassive face, the horrific truth dawning on her with the weight of an avalanche.

“You planned this,” Clara whispered, her voice cracking as fresh tears spilled over her cheeks. “You knew he was coming.”

Daniel wouldn't meet her eyes directly, fixing his gaze instead on a spot just to the right of her head. “I didn't want it to come to this, Clara. If Julianna hadn't threatened to go to the federal prosecutors, none of this would have been necessary. You were supposed to stay upstairs with the baby until the transfer went through.”

The armed intruder lowered his gun slightly, letting out a harsh chuckle as he leaned against the doorframe. “Your wife has more backbone than you gave her credit for, Daniel. The old lady threw a glass paperweight at my head. We’re lucky I didn't put a hole in the kid.”

Evelyn stumbled out of the hallway just then, clutching her bruised arm, her face twisting in sheer rage as she stared at her son. “You miserable, ungrateful bastard!” she yelled, her voice trembling with fury. “You brought criminals into our home? You’re risking your own flesh and blood for a woman you abandoned years ago?”

“Shut up, Mother!” Daniel snapped, his calm facade finally cracking as a flash of genuine panic crossed his features. He stepped forward, reaching into his inner jacket pocket and pulling out a small, black USB flash drive. He held it out toward the armed man. “Here. Take the drive. All the offshore account passwords and transfer logs are on it. Just take it and get out of here before the neighbors call the police.”

The intruder grinned, stepping across the room to snatch the flash drive from Daniel’s outstretched hand. He slipped it into his canvas jacket pocket, never once taking his eyes off the two women.

“Smart choice, architect,” the man said smoothly, backing slowly toward the shattered front door. “Pleasure doing business with you. Tell Julianna I said hello.”

With a swift pivot, the intruder bolted through the doorway and vanished into the suburban street outside.

Silence descended upon the living room once more, broken only by Maya’s exhausted whimpers. Clara slowly pushed herself up from the floor, her eyes locked onto Daniel with a look of pure, unadulterated hatred.

“It’s over, Daniel,” Clara said quietly, her voice ringing with a chilling finality. She turned and began walking toward the front door, stepping past her husband as if he were nothing more than a ghost.

Daniel reached out, grabbing her gently by the forearm to stop her. “Clara, wait. Where are you going?”

Clara didn’t look back. She yanked her arm free from his grip, her eyes blazing through her tears.

May you like

“To call the police,” she whispered, “and to make sure you spend the rest of your life behind bars.”
