Chapter 8 - The Price of Defiance

The heavy glass paperweight struck the intruder squarely in the shoulder with a dull thud, throwing off his aim just as he pulled the trigger. A deafening roar echoed through the confined space of the hidden alcove as a bullet punched a jagged hole through the mahogany bookcase, showering the floor with splinters of wood and white drywall dust. Maya woke instantly, letting out a piercing, terror-stricken scream that tore at Clara’s heart.
“Run!” Evelyn shrieked, stumbling backward as the intruder spun around, swearing violently and catching his balance.
Clara didn’t hesitate. Cradling Maya tightly against her chest with one arm, she used her free hand to shove past Evelyn, bursting out of the hidden alcove and into the hallway. The acrid smell of gunpowder hung heavy in the air, stinging her eyes and throat. She sprinted toward the living room, her bare feet pounding against the floorboards, her mind entirely focused on reaching the front door and getting out into the open air of the street where neighbors might hear them.
Behind her, the heavy thud of boots gave chase. The intruder had recovered faster than expected.
“Stop right there!” the man bellowed, his footsteps closing the gap with terrifying speed.
Clara vaulted over the edge of the living room rug, her foot catching slightly on the fringe, sending her sprawling forward. She twisted her body instinctively in mid-fall, wrapping her arms completely around Maya to absorb the impact. She hit the floor hard, scraping her elbows and knees against the hardwood, but she managed to keep the baby elevated, preventing Maya from taking any direct blow.
Groaning in pain, Clara scrambled back to her feet, but as she looked up toward the front entryway, her blood ran cold.
Standing in the shattered frame of the front door, blocking the only path to safety, was Daniel. He was wearing his usual tailored business suit, but his tie was ripped off, his hair was disheveled, and in his right hand, he held a heavy iron fireplace poker, breathing heavily as his eyes darted from Clara lying on the floor to the armed intruder emerging from the hallway behind her.
“Daniel!” Clara cried out, a desperate mixture of relief and fury washing over her. “Help us!”
May you like
Daniel stared at her, his face a pale, unreadable mask of guilt and cold calculation, slowly lowering the iron poker as the armed man raised his weapon right toward Clara’s chest.
