Chapter 6 - The Intruder in the Foyer

The violent splintering of wood echoed down the narrow hallway, followed by heavy, frantic footsteps pounding against the hardwood floor of the living room. Clara froze, her body going completely rigid as adrenaline flooded her veins. She pulled Maya tighter against her chest, turning her back to the open desk in a desperate protective instinct. Evelyn gasped, pressing herself flat against the wall of the hidden alcove, her face draining of all color as the realization of what was happening hit her.
“Daniel?” Evelyn called out, her voice cracking with sudden vulnerability. “Is that you?”
There was no answer from the living room, only the sound of heavy breathing and someone aggressively rifling through the couch cushions and side tables, tossing objects onto the floor with reckless abandon. The intruder wasn't knocking, and they weren't looking for a polite conversation. Whoever had just broken into the house was searching for something specific, and they were moving with terrifying speed.
Clara looked down at the open briefcase on the desk, then back toward the dark entrance of the alcove. The heavy mahogany bookcase still stood partially ajar, casting a long, skewed diagonal slash of light across the floorboards of the hallway. If they stepped out now, they would walk right into the path of whoever had breached their home.
“We need to lock this door,” Clara whispered fiercely, her voice trembling as she glared at Evelyn. “Help me push the bookcase shut!”
Evelyn shook her head frantically, paralyzed by a sudden wave of sheer terror that seemed to rob her of her usual commanding presence. “There’s no lock on the inside, Clara! It only opens from the outside with the brass key!”
Clara’s heart skipped a beat. She looked around the cramped, dusty space, desperate for any alternative exit. There were no windows, no secondary doors, just the single narrow opening leading back into the hallway where the unidentified footsteps were now drawing closer, sounding suspiciously heavy and deliberate.
Creak.
The sound of a shoe stepping onto the hardwood floor right outside the hidden alcove made both women stop breathing entirely. Clara closed her eyes for a split second, pressing her face into the top of Maya’s soft head, praying silently that the baby would stay asleep, praying that the intruder wouldn't notice the strange angle of the bookcase.
A shadow fell across the strip of light on the floor. Someone was standing right in the doorway, peering into the gloom of the secret room.

“I know you’re in there,” a raspy, unfamiliar voice rasped from the shadows, followed by the metallic click of a firearm being unholstered. “Hand over the briefcase, or nobody walks out of this house alive.”
