Chapter 12 - The Race Against the Syndicate

The words hung in the cold morning air like a death sentence. Clara’s blood ran completely cold as the true, horrifying scale of the danger slammed into her consciousness. It wasn't just about money, embezzlement, or a broken marriage anymore. The syndicate Julianna had described didn't leave loose ends, and if they believed Maya carried the digital keys to their accounts, no police car or suburban neighborhood would be able to keep them safe.

“We have to go,” Clara said, her maternal instincts kicking into overdrive with fierce, terrifying clarity. She turned toward the front door, shouting over her shoulder. “Evelyn! Get your keys! We’re getting in your car right now!”

Evelyn blinked in shock, finally breaking out of her stupor. “My car? Clara, the police are right here—”

“The police can’t protect us from what’s coming!” Clara interrupted, her voice ringing with absolute authority. She stepped past her mother-in-law into the hallway, grabbing a spare set of car keys hanging from the wall hook near the kitchen. “Julianna, you’re coming with us. If what you’re saying is true, we have less than twenty minutes before those men realize the flash drive Daniel gave them was a dummy.”

Julianna’s eyes widened in sheer astonishment. “A dummy? You knew?”

“I saw Daniel switching the drives in the study before the intruder broke in,” Clara lied smoothly, fabricating the detail to establish trust and keep them moving. In truth, she had suspected Daniel’s cowardice all along, but right now, survival trumped honesty. “Now move! Out the back door before the officers notice us leaving!”

They moved with frantic, silent speed through the kitchen and out the back patio doors into the overgrown backyard. The police were gathered around the front of the house, interviewing neighbors and filing initial reports, completely unaware of the frantic escape happening through the back fence.

Clara clutched Maya tightly against her chest, the baby letting out a soft cry of distress as the cold wind whipped around them. Evelyn unlocked her dark sedan parked in the gravel driveway behind the garage, her hands shaking so badly she dropped the keys twice before managing to slide them into the ignition.

“Get in, get in!” Evelyn urged, her voice cracking as she threw open the passenger door for Julianna and the back door for Clara.

Clara scrambled into the backseat, pulling Maya into her lap and strapping them both in with the seatbelt as Evelyn slammed her foot down on the gas pedal. The tires spun furiously in the gravel, kicking up dust and dirt before the sedan shot out of the alleyway and onto the main road leading toward the downtown financial district.

Julianna gripped the dashboard, staring out the front windshield with a grim, terrified expression. “Take the old highway bypass,” she warned. “The main bridge is already blocked off by utility construction.”

As Evelyn jerked the steering wheel to swerve onto the bypass, Clara looked out the rear window of the sedan. A sleek black SUV was idling at the end of the alleyway they had just exited, its tinted windows rolling down just enough to reveal the muzzle of a rifle barrel aiming directly at their retreating vehicle.
