Chapter 7 - The Sub-Basement Ambush

The red laser dot traced a frantic, jagged line across the fabric of Elena’s beige pantsuit before snapping upward and locking dead center on her forehead. Elena froze, her breath catching in her throat, her hands flying up in instinctive self-defense.

“Don’t move,” a harsh, distorted voice crackled through a tactical speaker somewhere down the dark corridor.

Maya didn't hesitate. With a fluidity that defied the tight fit of her red dress, she dropped low, sweeping her foot across the floor to catch the edge of the heavy metal elevator door, forcing it shut just as a deafening volley of suppressed gunfire chewed through the outer frame. Sparks showered down like fireworks, illuminating the cramped interior with blinding flashes of white.

“Cover!” Maya yelled, yanking Elena down behind the thick steel control panel of the lift.

“They knew we were coming,” Elena gasped, pressing her hands over her ears as another burst of rounds ricocheted off the exterior casing, sending sharks of hot lead skittering across the floor. “The keycard! It must have a secondary GPS tracker built into the magnetic strip!”

“Sterling anticipated every move we made,” Maya said, her voice remarkably calm despite the kinetic chaos surrounding them. She checked the small, snub-nosed firearm she had concealed in her holster, her fingers moving with practiced familiarity. “He wanted us to take this elevator. He wanted us trapped down here in the dark.”

“So what do we do? We’re sitting ducks!” Elena’s voice cracked with rising panic, her professional composure finally shattering under the relentless pressure.

“We don’t wait to be hunted,” Maya replied, her dark eyes flashing with cold determination. She looked at the manual override latch on the side of the elevator door. “On three, I’m kicking this door open and drawing their fire. You take the maintenance crawlspace to the left. It leads straight to the central server room.”

“I’m not leaving you here!” Elena protested, grabbing Maya’s arm.

“You aren't doing me a favor, Elena. You’re securing the only leverage we have left,” Maya said, pulling her arm free with gentle firmness. “If I don’t walk out of this basement, you take that server drive and you burn Vanguard to the ground. Do you understand me?”

Elena stared at Maya, seeing the absolute lack of fear in the other woman’s eyes—only a profound, consuming desire for justice that transcended survival. Slowly, Elena nodded, her jaw tightening as she gripped the edge of the metal crawlspace grate behind them.

“One,” Maya whispered, her muscles tensing like a coiled spring.

“Two.”

With a sudden, explosive kick, Maya slammed her high heel into the center of the elevator door, blowing the pneumatic locks wide open and hurling herself straight into the line of fire.
