Chapter 6 - The Maintenance Secret

The hidden utility door clicked open with a heavy, pneumatic sigh, revealing a narrow, vertical shaft lit only by the amber glow of emergency floor strips. The air inside smelled of ozone, hot copper, and decades of accumulated dust. Elena pressed her back against the corrugated metal wall, her breathing shallow as she pulled a thin, plastic keycard from the breast pocket of her beige pantsuit.
“This is the old service lift,” Elena whispered, her voice echoing softly in the cramped space. She held the card out, but didn't insert it into the wall reader just yet. Her eyes flicked nervously toward the ceiling where the muffled sounds of the building’s automated lockdown system rumbled like distant thunder. “It drops straight down forty floors into the sub-basement. No stops. No overrides.”
Maya stepped into the lift beside her, the vibrant red of her dress contrasting sharply with the drab industrial gray of the elevator interior. The three tactical guards remained outside in the lobby, securing the perimeter against whatever reinforcements Sterling might have left behind.
“Do it,” Maya said, her tone leaving no room for hesitation. “Every second we waste here, Sterling gets closer to wiping the servers.”
Elena swallowed hard, her hand trembling slightly as she slid the plastic card into the battered magnetic slot. The reader flashed green once, then twice, before emitting a sharp, metallic groan as the heavy cable overhead engaged. With a sudden, stomach-churning jolt, the lift began its rapid descent into the abyss.
The ride was silent except for the screech of metal against metal and the rushing wind whistling through the ventilation grates. Elena stared at the glowing amber floor indicator as the numbers ticked backward—35, 30, 25—each digit feeling like a heavy hammer blow against her fading composure.
“You never answered my question back in the lobby,” Elena said suddenly, raising her voice slightly to carry over the mechanical roar. “Why my father? Out of all the executives involved in the collapse, why target our family specifically?”
Maya didn't look at her. She kept her gaze fixed on the corner of the small cabin, her reflection ghosted faintly in the greasy control panel. “Because your father didn't just steal money, Elena. He took my mother’s name off the patents. He stripped her of her doctorate, locked her out of the lab, and when she tried to fight back, he had her institutionalized under a false psychiatric hold.”
Elena flinched as if she had been physically struck. The amber light caught the sudden paleness of her skin. “That… that’s not true. The board records showed she signed a voluntary buyout.”
“The board records that your father forged the night before she died in that clinic,” Maya whispered, her voice dangerously quiet. The restraint in her tone made it infinitely more terrifying than any scream. “I was seven years old when they dragged her away. I watched your father shake hands with the corrupt judge who signed the commitment papers.”
The lift lurched violently, jolting both women off balance as it reached the bottom floor with a bone-jarring thud. The emergency brakes hissed, and the metal doors began to slide apart, revealing a long, dimly lit concrete corridor stretching out into absolute darkness.

Before the doors could fully open, a bright red laser sight flickered across the back wall of the elevator cabin, pointing directly at Elena’s chest.
