Chapter 1 - The Lobby Confrontation “That’s mine.”

“No, it isn’t.”
Elena Vance tightened her grip on the patterned beige handbag, her knuckles turning white against the polished leather. Her high ponytail swayed sharply as she glared at the woman standing before her in the pristine marble lobby.
Maya Jenkins did not flinch. The thirty-year-old Black woman stood tall in her form-fitting red dress, the high slit catching the harsh morning light through the towering glass windows. She adjusted her gold hoop earrings with agonizing slowness, her breath steady and unhurried.
“You’re holding stolen property, Elena,” Maya said, her voice dropping to a low, melodic register that cut through the cavernous room. “Drop the handle before security makes this embarrassing.”
“You think you can just walk in here and take what my family built?” Elena hissed, her voice trembling slightly despite her best efforts to sound composed. She pulled the bag closer to her chest, feeling the heavy, rigid outline of the metal lockbox hidden inside.
“Your family built nothing on truth,” Maya replied. She tilted her head, her dark eyes locking onto Elena’s with a chilling calmness. “That bag contains the ledger from the Vanguard account. The one your father used to erase my mother’s life work forty years ago.”
“You’re insane. My father was an honorable man!”
“Was he?” Maya gestured subtly with two fingers.
From the shadows near the elevators, three athletic guards in black tactical jackets and mirrored sunglasses stepped forward in perfect unison. They didn't rush. Their movements were cold, calculated, and menacing. The lead guard placed a heavy hand on Elena’s shoulder, his grip unyielding.
“Let go, Elena,” Maya whispered, stepping closer until the scent of expensive perfume and danger filled the air. “Or I open that bag right here and let the world see what kind of man your father really was.”

Elena’s heart pounded against her ribs. She looked from Maya’s fierce, unblinking eyes to the three silent guards blocking every exit. With trembling fingers, she loosened her grip on the canvas strap, the smooth leather sliding against her palm. As the bag slipped free into Maya’s outstretched hand, the brass zipper caught slightly, popping open just enough to reveal a corner of a blood-stained journal tucked inside the pocket.
