Chapter 3 - The Descent into Shadows

The heavy steel shutter slammed into the marble floor with a deafening crash, sealing the lobby off from the bustling city street outside. Emergency strobe lights flickered to life overhead, casting long, crimson shadows across the polished walls. Maya clutched the patterned handbag tighter against her ribs, her tactical instincts instantly kicking in as she assessed the sudden tactical shift in the room.

“Secure the perimeter,” the lead guard commanded, his deep voice cutting through the wailing alarm. He didn't look at Elena or Maya; his eyes were fixed entirely on the glass revolving doors, where a shadowy figure had just materialized outside.

Elena took two cautious steps backward, her previous bravado evaporating into genuine confusion. “I didn't authorize a lockdown. Who initiated code red?”

“Not your team, and certainly not mine,” Maya said calmly, her eyes narrowing as she watched the silhouette through the reinforced glass. The figure outside raised a hand, pressing a small device against the exterior panel. With a sharp hiss, the emergency override engaged, and the revolving doors slowly began to spin inward.

The three guards formed a protective triangle around Maya and Elena, drawing sleek, non-lethal kinetic blasters from their tactical holsters. The tension in the room thickened, suffocating and absolute. No one breathed. No one moved. The spinning doors clicked into place, and a tall man in a tailored charcoal suit stepped out of the gloom, holding a matching leather briefcase.

“Good morning, ladies,” Arthur Sterling said smoothly, adjusting his titanium-rimmed glasses. He looked entirely out of place amidst the tactical posturing and red emergency lighting. “I trust we aren't interrupting a family reunion?”

Maya stepped forward, placing herself between Arthur and the handbag. “You’re trespassing, Sterling. This area is under private jurisdiction.”

“Private jurisdiction?” Arthur chuckled, a dry, humorless sound that echoed off the marble walls. He walked closer, ignoring the guards' leveled weapons completely. “Maya, sweet child, your mother’s little book is charming, but it’s completely obsolete. The assets weren't hidden in a bank account in Zurich. They were liquidated into digital tokens three weeks ago.”

Elena gasped, clutching her chest. “That’s impossible. The board never approved asset migration!”

“The board doesn't exist anymore, Elena,” Arthur replied gently, stopping just six feet away. He opened his briefcase with a slow, deliberate click, revealing rows of blinking server drives. “Your father sold the Vanguard shell company to my syndicate yesterday morning. And the handbag you two are fighting over?”

Arthur smiled warmly, pointing directly at the patterned fabric in Maya’s grip. “It has a localized EMP tracker sewn into the lining. We’ve been watching you walk right into our trap.”
