Chapter 15 - The Dawn of Truth

The helicopter’s turbine engines gave a high-pitched, dying shriek as the fuel dump engaged, cutting power to the rotors in a cloud of white vapor. The heavy aircraft shuddered violently, settling back firmly onto the reinforced concrete of the helipad as the rotor blades slowly wound down to a complete, silent stop.
The wind on the rooftop died down to a gentle breeze, leaving only the sound of distant traffic rising from the city below.
Harrison Vance stumbled backward out of the cabin door, catching himself against the metal railing, staring in stunned disbelief at the dead control panels of his private aircraft. His dynasty, his offshore accounts, his digital empire—all of it had been wiped clean in a matter of seconds by the very system he had built to control the world.
Elena stood a few paces away, her beige pantsuit stained with soot and blood, looking at her father not with fear or anger, but with a profound, liberating pity.
Maya stepped out of the helicopter cabin, her red dress torn and stained, her posture as fierce and unyielding as it had been when she first stepped into the Vanguard lobby hours earlier. She walked slowly toward Harrison, stopping just a few feet away from the trembling, defeated man.
“The Vanguard account is empty, Harrison,” Maya said, her voice soft, clear, and absolute. “And the public archive has just received the original, unedited patents bearing my mother’s true name. By sunrise, the world will know who she was.”
Before Harrison could speak, the heavy steel access hatch behind them clattered open once more, and a squad of federal investigators—led by the real, uncompromised internal affairs division—poured out onto the rooftop with weapons drawn and badges held high.
“Harrison Vance, you are under arrest for corporate fraud, biohazardous negligence, and conspiracy,” the lead investigator commanded, stepping forward with a pair of steel cuffs gleaming in the late afternoon sun.
Harrison didn't resist. As the cold metal locked around his wrists, he didn't look at the investigators, and he didn't look at Maya. He looked only at his daughter, standing silently in the fading sunlight. Elena didn't look away, holding his gaze until the federal agents led him down the hatch and out of sight for the very last time.
The rooftop grew quiet once more.
Elena turned to Maya, taking a slow, deep breath of the clean, unpolluted air as the city lights began to flicker on across the horizon. For the first time in thirty years, the weight of the past had finally been lifted from their shoulders.
“What happens now?” Elena asked softly, looking out over the sprawling skyline.

Maya adjusted her gold hoop earrings, a faint, genuine smile touching the corners of her lips. She reached into her pocket, pulling out the old patterned beige handbag—its damaged lining now empty, its dark secrets finally laid to rest.
“Now,” Maya said, her voice steady and full of unwritten tomorrows, “we start building.”
