Chapter 9 - The Ultimatum from Above

The glare of the industrial flashlight pinned Arthur and Lily to the floor of the cellar like insects under a microscope.

Arthur shielded his eyes with one hand, pulling Lily slightly behind him as he squinted up at the silhouette framed against the stars.

"Let us out of here, Elena," Arthur demanded, his voice cracking with a mixture of fury and exhaustion.

"You've made your point. Whatever you want, just name it."

Elena slowly lowered the flashlight beam slightly, illuminating her face—her expression was devoid of anger, filled instead with a chilling, businesslike detachment.

"I don't want the house anymore, Arthur," Elena replied, her voice carrying clearly down the damp concrete shaft.

"The house is a crumbling money pit, just like your architectural firm."

"Then what is this?" Arthur shouted, holding up the silver locket in his hand so the beam of light caught its polished surface.

"Why are you doing this?"

Elena tilted her head, her long dark hair shifting as she adjusted her grip on the heavy flashlight.

"Because of what is inside that locket, Arthur," she said, her tone hardening.

"Or rather, what is written on the back of the photograph of your late, unlamented wife."

Arthur froze, his thumb pressing against the inner rim of the silver pendant he still held in his palm.

He had completely forgotten about the folded paper he had felt inside moments before the light blinded them.

With trembling fingers, he pried open the tiny latch holding the photograph in place and slid the microscopic slip of paper free.

He held it up toward the light streaming down from above, squinting to make out the handwritten words scrawled in faded blue ink.

It was Sarah’s handwriting, neat and slanted, detailing an entirely different version of the night she died than the one the police had recorded.

‘If anything happens to me, Arthur did it,’ the note read, followed by a list of bank account numbers in the Cayman Islands.

Arthur’s breath caught in his throat, the world tilting sideways as the darkest secret of his past was laid bare for his daughter to potentially discover.

"You see," Elena continued softly from above, "I’m not the monster your daughter thinks I am, Arthur."

"I'm just the cleaner tying up loose ends that you were too cowardly to finish."
