Chapter 12 - The Confession on the Line

Arthur yanked frantically on the driver's side door handle, but the electronic locks held firm against his desperate pulls.
In the back seat, Lily began to cry softly again, clutching her stuffed rabbit so hard the seams threatened to split.
"Daddy, I want to go inside, I'm scared," Lily whimpered, her voice cutting through Arthur’s rising panic like a knife.
"It's okay, baby, look at me, don't look outside," Arthur said, turning around in his seat and pressing his palms against the glass partition.
Through the windshield, Elena stood illuminated by the porch light, calmly placing the telephone receiver to her ear while staring directly at him.
She tapped the glass of the front door with her fingernail, motioning for him to roll down his window, though the electrical system was completely dead.
Suddenly, the dashboard radio crackled to life, static hissing through the speakers before a clear, recorded voice echoed through the car.
It was Arthur’s own voice, speaking in hushed, nervous tones, recorded months ago during a phone conversation he barely remembered having.
‘The brakes are cut... she won't make it down the mountain road... we’ll finally be free.’
Arthur froze, the blood draining completely from his face as the audio recording looped through the car’s integrated Bluetooth system.
It wasn't a live feed; it was a digital trap he had walked into the moment he paired his phone to the car’s console a year ago.
Elena pressed a small remote control in her hand, and the power windows slowly rolled down an inch, letting the cool night air rush inside.
"Do you hear that, Arthur?" Elena’s voice floated through the cracked window, calm, measured, and terrifyingly clear.
"That's the sound of a federal warrant being automatically transmitted to the state police department."
"You set this whole thing up from the very beginning," Arthur whispered, leaning toward the opening in the window, his voice defeated.
"You never cared about the house, or the money, or even Sarah."
"I cared about justice for my sister," Elena replied coldly, the warmth entirely draining from her voice.
"Sarah was my twin, Arthur. And you thought you could get away with murder just by changing your name and moving to a new town."

Before Arthur could utter a single word in response, the wail of distant police sirens began to echo up the quiet suburban street.
