Chapter 4 - Footsteps in the Hall

The words on the parchment seemed to burn against Arthur’s retinas, the forged signature looking so convincing that he momentarily questioned whether he had signed it in a haze of grief.

He dropped the paper back into the empty drawer, his breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps as the reality of his situation began to sink in.

Elena wasn't just a new wife brought in to heal a broken family; she was a calculated presence, an architect of quiet displacement moving pieces across a board he hadn't even realized he was playing on.

A sharp, metallic creak echoed from the hallway outside his office door, breaking the suffocating stillness of the room.

Arthur froze, his hand still hovering over the open drawer, his muscles tensing for an encounter he suddenly felt entirely unprepared to handle.

The sound came again—the slow, measured tread of bare feet pressing against the vintage hardwood floorboards just beyond the threshold.

"Elena?" Arthur called out, his voice sounding hollow and uncertain even to his own ears.

There was no answer, only the sound of breathing, soft and rhythmic, pausing just outside the doorframe.

Slowly, the shadow of a figure stretched across the sliver of light illuminating the hallway floor, blocking the amber glow from the wall sconces.

Arthur pushed himself up from the floor, his blue button-down shirt sticking to his damp back as he stepped toward the door.

He reached out, grabbed the brass handle, and yanked the door open with a sudden, forceful motion.

The hallway was entirely empty, the amber light casting long, distorted shadows against the floral wallpaper.

At the far end of the corridor, leading toward the staircase and Lily’s bedroom, a single, glowing golden thread lay resting on the top step.

Arthur walked toward it, his boots making heavy thuds on the floor, and picked up the fabric scrap.

It was a torn piece of silk from Elena’s wrap dress, snagged neatly on the brass latch of Lily’s half-open bedroom door.
