Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass

The dining room chandelier cast a harsh, yellow glare over the uneaten roast chicken and untouched crystal water glasses.

Lily stood rigid beside her chair, her tiny frame trembling beneath the pristine white dress and its cheerful pink sash.

Tears tracked hot paths through the dust on her cheeks, smearing her skin as she pointed a shaking index finger directly across the mahogany table.

Clutched tightly in her other hand was Mr. Whiskers, his plush grey ears frayed from years of comfort, absorbing the moisture of her white-knuckled grip.

"She's not my new mommy!" Lily screamed, her voice cracking with a raw, desperate fury that pierced the heavy silence of the room.

"She's a monster!"

Arthur flinched, his fingers tightening around the stem of his water glass until his knuckles turned chalky white.

He wore his favorite blue button-down shirt, the sleeves rolled up to reveal forearms tense with suppressed exhaustion.

He cast a sideways glance at Elena, who sat immaculately composed in her silky gold wrap dress.

Elena’s long dark hair cascaded over one shoulder like liquid bronze, her expression entirely unreadable beneath carefully sculpted composure.

She did not flinch, nor did she raise her voice to defend herself against the child's explosive accusation.

Instead, Elena took a slow, deliberate sip of water, her dark eyes locking onto Arthur with a look of heavy, shared understanding.

"Lily, go to your room right now," Arthur said, his tone flat, strained, and dangerously quiet.

"You heard what she did, Daddy!" Lily sobbed, taking a frantic step forward, her voice rising to a frantic pitch.

"She took Mommy’s silver locket out of the velvet box in your drawer and threw it in the trash can behind the garage!"

Arthur stopped breathing, his gaze instantly snapping from his daughter to the woman in the gold dress.

Elena slowly lowered her glass to the table, her lips parting into a thin, enigmatic smile that sent a shiver straight down Arthur’s spine.
